B-bali tickets on sale now Demand will be up. but, not at record clip By SCOTT M. Such a plan, he claims, is not This increase in interest is expected needed here. The figures bear out his assertion. The Wolverines were ranked first by UPI in the spring of 1977 and reached the NCAA semifinals, yet that fall only 5300 tickets were sold, less than half of Crisler Arena's capacity. At other Big Ten schools, most notably Ohio State and Indiana, student demand for tickets is so high that only half-season packages are offered, thus giving more students an opportunity to attend at least some of the games. THE TICKET PURCHASE procedure at Michigan will be similar to that used last year. Students must pay for their tickets in person. Tickets are $37.50 for students and $56 for spouses (proof of marriage is required). Ticket applicants must provide a validated Michigan ID card and a driver's license at the time of payment. Seating priority, as usual, will be determined by the number of credit hours earned at the University, and all seat assignments within each priority will be based on a random selection.- The following explanation should eliminate the confusion over group ' ticket purchase procedure: One person may apply for tickets for an entire group, so long as he or she presents a Michigan ID and the correct amount of money for each group member. Group-' seating (with a limit of 20) will be based on the lowest priority in the group. DRIVES INTO 2nd DECADE: Cager Wakefield an IMfixture By DOUG NEARY He's not getting older, he's getting better. And at 28 years of age, he's almost too good to be better. His name is Chris Wakefield, his game is basketball, and for over ten years Wakefield has been a fixture at the Intramural Sports Building., Wakefield's IM obsession began in 1969, his freshman year at the Univer- sity. Since that time, Wakefield has played every inch on the IM courts a thousand times on his way to becoming a local legend of sorts. The 1973 graduate set a single game scoring record of 52 points in 1972, a record that still stands. The honorable-mention all-city guard from Detroit Macek.enzie originally planned to play one year of IM basket- ball before trying out for the Michigan varsity as a walk-on. But the large number of guards on scholarship at the time discouraged Wakefield from ever trying out, a decision which continues to haunt him after four guards were kicked off the 1970-71 team for breaking training rules. Wakefield has always loved playing. at the Old IM because of its traditionally good competition. He recalls that the I l used to be so crowded withtbasketball enthusiasts that games had to be restricted to half, court, four-on-four, at a time before the CCRB and the NCRB had been con- structed and Waterman Gym (now razed) was the only other place to play. Wakefield has a user's pass which gives him access to all the buildings and programs of the recreational sports department. Yet even now, Wakefield, Wakefield ... He feels it stands above other facilities as "the place to be for basketball jocks. A true gym." Wakefield said he feels the Michigan intramural program is "one of the best in the country" because of the way it applies its sizable budget. The only im- provement he said he would like to see is an upgrading of the referee program, and perhaps, the clarification of the protest procedure. The new Superstar Division, which was designed for tougher competition, will help the good players remain shar- per and provide an even greater test of their skills, Wakefield said. He also hopes the new league will be "as suc- cessful as last year's instant scheduling was." Anyone who has seen this IM diehard play, knows Wakefield is definitely in a Superstar Division of his own. "And, yes," he adds with a pearly grin, "I'm gonna' keep on playing." /' GRIDDE PICKS With the new campus fad gaining momentum and sales of razors, after- shave and alcohol spiraling, there are rumors that Gridde Picks, always a campus tradition, will fall by the wayside.
