RSG OFFICE (Fishbowl/DIag 20-22) 763-5371 ,2006 RACKHA VI 743-571 20__R _-, By MARTHA CRALL The Michigan hockey team, with new head coach Wilf Martin, begins its quest, to shake its newborn negative image when it opens its 1980-81 season tonight at Bowling Green in the first of a home-and- home series. Seasonal play for the icers begins in the wake of great controversy stirred up by Sunday night's hazing of a freshman player. The hazing received considerable media attention and undisclosed disciplinary action by the athletic department. The incident has also disrupted practices all week, which could have an effect on the hockey team's sharpness in the opener. It could also spark the team into playing an inspired contest in hopes of silencing critics of the program and the team's methods. Michigan carries a "let's just get down to playing hockey" attitude into the game and will try to keep ntact their perfect 11-0 record against the Falcons. Martin, who has added to the problems surroun- ding the team by missing most of the pre-season practices with a stomach ailment, will count on his defense to be the strong point. Western Collegiate Hockey Association rookie-of- the-year and 1979-80 Michigan MVP goalie Paul Fricker leads the way fpr Martin's defense. Senior captain Tim Manning, who set a Michigan record for defensemen with 51 points last season, will also spearhead the defensive corps. Senior John Blum, who fell just short of Manning with 50 points last year will also toe the blueline, along with senior Mark Perry, who has junior eligibility, and juniors Steve Richmond, Brian Lun- dberg, Paul Brandrup and Dave Richter. "We're going to try to play tough team defense," said assistant coach John Giordano, who also added that defense was what the team had basically concen- trated on in practice and would try to concentrate on, the whole season long. Michigan's offense will be suffering from the losses of their two top scorers from last year, All-American Murray Eaves (3649-85) and center Dan Lerg (37-39- 76). Third leading scorer sophomore Bruno Baseotto is left to pick up the slack along with sophomore Brad Tippett. Up front, Martin will have experience in seniors Gordie Hampson, Jeff Mars,, and Roger Bourne. Bowling Green coach Jerry York is optimistic about his team's chances against Michigan's tough defense. "Our strength is in our skating. It is much improved from last year." York, whose Falcons finished with a 16-20-2 mark in 1979-80, will be counting on junior wing George Mc- Phee, who led the Falcons last year in scoring with 45 points and as a freshman had a hand in 88 points. Joining him is sophomore center Brian Hills,' who scored 40 points for Bowling Green last season. York said of the series, "We're looking forward to breaking the jinx. The loss stretches the Pistons' futility streak to 19 straight games carrying over from last season., But the 0-5 Pistons did not go down without a fight as they rallied back from a 81-61 deficit at the beginning of the fourth quarter. They took a 97-96 lead with 1:47 remaining on two Greg Kelser free throws, but Johnny Moore connected on a driving layup and James Silas sank two free throws to put the Spurs ahead to stay mark. at the 1:10 I KELSER, who scored 16 of his game high 28 points in the final quarter, put in a short baseline jumper to cut San An- tonio margin to one. That set the stage for the "Iceman" Gervin's heroics, as he put the game on ice for good. Playing against San Antonio's reser- ves, the Pistons battled back to trim the lead to 35-34 with seven minutes remaining in the half. But then Gervin, who had been taking a breather on the sidelines, went back to work and led a charge which saw him score on a hanging baseline scoop shot and two jumpers, enabling the visitors from Texas to go to the locker room with a 54- 48 halftime advantage. Phbysicians said Brett, the key to Kansas City's offensive punch, would be released from the hospital this after- noon and would have to determine for hiniself whether he felt like playing tonight. Dr. Paul Meyer, the team physician, said'the 20-minute surgical process to lance the hemorrhoid would Felieve "a lot of the pain" that has dogged Brett nce the condition was detected Satur- day. Meyer described the operation by proctologist Dr. John Heryer as 'routine for this type of surgery. The hemorrhoid had hobbled the Kansas City star as the Royals dropped the first two World Series games to the Philadelphia Phillies. Meyer said Brett would be kept in seclusion and off his feet yesterday. Meyer said that the prognosis for Brett was "good," adding "Dr. Heryer and myself feel there's a pretty good chance he'll play Friday night." See more sports, pages 12 and 13. Brett flirted with a .400 season before finishing with a league-leading .390, the best in the majors since 1941. He lashed two singles in three trips to the plate in Wednesday night's 6-4 loss in hostile Veterans Stadium.
