4 SPORTS Page 8 -Thursday, October 16, 1980 The Michigan Daily Healthy hoopsters show 'O' at premiere practice By MARK FISCHER The new skipper got his first chance to look over the entire crew yesterday, and promptly announced, "We couldn't beat anybody yet." It was one of the many one-liners that fill Bill Frieder's repertoire of humor, but the first-year Wolverine head coach knows that there are plenty of hard workouts down the road before Michigan opens its season November 24 with an exhibition game against Win- dsor. THE WOLVERINES, under NCAA Division I rules, officially opened prac- tice yesterday; in other words, it marked the first day the team could practice -under the supervision of Frieder and his three assistants. Frieder said his team is relatively free of injury, as the only ailments, which belong to freshmen Tim McCor- mick and M.C. Bqrton, are minor. McCormick, the highly sought-after 6-10% center-forward from Clarkston, suffered a slight groin pull and an in- flammation of the hip a week ago yesterday. But McCormick said the hip "is just about 100 percent . . . it's nothing at all to worry about." McCORMICK played yesterday for the first time since incurring his in- juries, and ran every drill with the team except wind sprints. Burton, a 6-6 forward from Grand Rapids, twisted his ankle in Tuesday's practice, but his roommate, freshman forward Dean Hopson, said Burton would sit out only "a day or two" of practice. McCormick, Burton, and Hopson are but three of the six new faces on the Blue squad. The other three newcomers are freshmen Jon Antonides and Dan Pelekoudas, and first year assistant coach Don Sicko (pronounced seeko). Antonides, a center from Sarnia, On- tario, and Pelekoudas, a playmaking guard from suburban Chicago, are the tall and the short of the team-7-2 and 5- 11, respectively. FRIEDER EXPECTS his freshmen, who hesaid "all did a nice job" yester- day, to help the team. "It's hard to tell this early," he said. "But I'll be disap- pointed if they don't contribute." Besides the new faces, Michigan basketball will be sporting a new offen- se this season. "Our breakdown work (in practice) today was geared to the new offense," said Frieder. "It's a little more sophisticated than some of those we've had in the past. We'll be able to read defenses better, get free easier, and we'll have a lot more options with it." Also returning to practice yesterday were seniors Mike McGee, co-captain Paul Heuerman, Johnny Johnson, Mark and Marty Bodnar, junior co- captain Thad Garner, and sophomores Joe James, Ike Person, and Leo Brown. The team is hoping that a solid contribution from the incoming freshmen, combined with improved. play from the returning players and a new offensive system, will help the team become a definite threat for the Big Ten title. Every year some teams con- sistently "blow-out" their opponents. But this year there is a new division, called the Superstar Division, which has been created to help prevent the large number of blow-outs that occur in. IM competition. "We're trying to put some equity into the system," explained Sandy Sanders, Director of the Intramural Sports Building. Sanders stressed that the new division is open to anyone who wishes to compete in it. The division was originally scheduled to have competition in the major IM sports-softball, football, and basket- ball; the response to the new division has been shaky, however. There were only four teams which competed in the Superstar Division in softball. Even so, Moby Benedict, Supervisor of IM of ficials, said that he thought it was a success. "We only had four teams, but those who competed enjoyed the high level of competition. The division didn't attract any teams for football. Benedict claims that this is because of the highly competitive nature of the currently existing, divisions-Residence Hall, Fraternity,; and Independent. Right now, it appears that the big hope for success with the division lies in basketball. Both Benedict and Sanders believe that there will, be a large response to the Superstar Division in basketball because of the high caliber of competition in the sport. The league is on shaky ground at the IM department, however. Sandy San- ders said that he did not like the idea of the division because "It doesn't fit my idea of Intramural Sports." He added, however, that he would go along with the idea if it was what people wanted. The division is struggling now, but the department still hopes that it will catch on, so, if you think you've got a team that can take on the best in IM sports, the new Superstar Division is for you. q - TWO ' s .cam..
