I MSA coordinates vol By DAVID MEYER A massive voter registration drive, coordinated by the Michigan Student Assembly, will. be launched next week On an attempt to increase student political clout, according to MSA of- ficials. MSA President Marc Breakstone said a successful drive could substantially improve the power of student-interest lobbyists both in Washington and in Lansing. Breakstone also mentioned the possibility of, establishing a per- manent Lansing-based MSA lobbyist. 0 "Students are one segment of society that are disproportionately unrepresen- ted in the *electoral process," Breakstone said. "By registering students, we're empowering students." MSA OFFICIALS said they hope students will mobilize particularly to vote on two ballot proposals. "There are several issues on the November ballot that severely and directly affect students," Breakstone said. MSA sup- ports a proposal to lower the minimum .drinking age to 19 and opposes the Tisch tax cut proposal. Jonathon Feiger, MSA vice president for legislative relations and official student lobbyist, emphasized the need ter rive to register to vote in order to have in- fluence. "It's no.good to have a student know about Tisch if he can't vote again- st it," Feiger said. The primary force behind the registration drive, Feiger said MSA has solicited the help of about 65 non- partisan registrars from various local organizations. Registration tables will be set up on campus and in all the dor- mitories, and registrars will canvas the student precincts in a door-to-door search for eligible persons, Feiger said. The drive is scheduled to begin this Sunday and continue through Oct. 6, the deadline for registration to vote in the November election. Some 17.3 million barrels of oil pass through the strait each day. The United States imports 2 million barrels a day of Persian Gulf oil, or about 9 percent of total U.S. oil needs. Japan relies on the gulf for about 70 percent of its oil and Western Europe for 45 percent. IN PARIS, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Aziz told French President Giscard d'Estaing Iraq did not want to interfere with shipping in the gulf. 1U In New York, Treasury Secretary William Miller said the Carter ad- ministration had "contingency plans for an interruption of oil supplies, but we do not think that will happen." Iraqi neighbor Kuwait received the thousands of American and other foreign refugees who streamed out of Iran yesterday. The lucky ones got out by car. Others crossed the desert sands on foot. Arriving in Amsterdam, Holland, af- ter a flight from Kuwait, Briceson Cook of Houston, Tex. said his company evacuated its executives from the bom- 1 port bed Iraqi port of Basra but left him and the others to fend for themselves. REPORTS FROM Beirut indicate the Iraqi attacks on Iran have not en- dangered the lives of the 52 American hostages. A spokesman at the Iranian Revolutionary Guard headquarters in Tehran said yesterday by telephone, "They are all right. They are in safe places." The spokesman, who refused to give his name when called by The Associated Press, added, "As we know, the militant students have moved them to different places, but they are all right."
