All five of the Kochenderfers worked at Paul's Auto Wash in Royal Oak at some point before they attended the 'University. "We had a family dynasty there," recalled Kirsten. "Customers would say to us, 'You look like the last one that worked here." The youngest member of the "Kochenderfer dynasty," 12-year-old Kurt, still has a few years before he decides whether or not to join the majority of his brothers and sisters at U-M. Mr. Kochenderfer describes his youngest son as "built like a brick outhouse," and warns that a family friend, a football coach at MSU, is already trying to lure Kurt away from the rival Wolverines. But Kent thinks his brother's interest in the University is growing. "He never cared about U-M much before. Star Wars was always much more important. But I think he's coming around." 'Go Blue' must be the advice given to members of the Kochenderfer family. CIMINA, Italy (AP)-A 14-year feud in this tiny southern Italian town has claimed 36 lives-nearly one-fifth of the male population-and neither the town- speople nor the police can stop the bloodshed. Police have arrested murder suspec- ts in vain. Villagers refuse to testify, partly out of fear they will be the next victims, partly out of distrust for a governmentwhich they say has aban- doned and forgotten them. "THEY HAVE their own codes, their own laws which have nothing to do with normal laws," said frustrated Police Chief Milazzo Antonini. The deaths are, blamed on the "Ndrangheta," the Calabrese Mafia. The Ndrangheta is powerfttl all over Calabria-police report 900 murders in the region last year-but in Cimina it grips the town. Everyone has been for- ced to side with one of two factions to survive. The two clansnthe Romanos and Barillaros on one side and the Polifronis and Francos on the other, want to control the markets, the patronage jobs, the protection money paid by anyone who wants to do business in town-in short, almost every aspect of town life. THE SMALLEST transaction-even selling a chicken at market-is con- trolled by the Ndrangheta. "If you want to come to this town and sell two chickens for 2,000 lire (about $2.40), you have to give half of it to the Ndrangheta," Antonini said. "The people accept it, not because they like it but because they are afraid," he said. Cinima is hidden in the Calabrian hills in the tip of the Italian boot. Most who lived here 15 years ago have left, some to find work in the North, some to escape the feud, or population has dropped about 400 in 1980. "faida.' The 1,000 in 1965 to i HALF THE houses are abandoned. The streets are empty and silent. No one ventures out. There are almost no cars and the only sound at night is the ringing of church bells. The graveyard is crowded with the faida's victims, all men, most in their 20s and 30s. Graves are stacked three- deep, with the photos of the men who@ have died framed and attached to the granite markers. Antonietta, a 28-year-old widow, lives with her two daughters and her paren- ts. Her husband was killed in Marach as he played cards in the town's only tavern. The bartender was blinded in one eye; a young boy playing with them was paralyzed in the cross fire. ANTONIETTA agreed to be inter- viewed only if her real name and her husband's name were not used. She is dressed in traditional mourning, a black dress, black stockings and a black scarf covering her hair. She smiles as she talks, but lines in her still- young face betray her pain. "We don't know why he was killed," she said. "He started bringing home bad company. I said be careful but he said not to worry, to be calm." She twists her gold wedding ring around her finger: "What can you do'? It is useless to become angry after someone is lost," she said. Police believe her husband was killed because he tried to persuade his friends to release a pharmacist they had kid- napped from a nearby town. The victim had nothing to do with the kidnapping; he waskilled because he opposed it. The spiral of violence began in June. 1966 with the murder of Francesco Barillaro, area chief of the Ndrangheta and boss of the Romano-Barillaro clan.
