J, BIU 1JOUR C1 By BECKY HOBART For the members of the Crew team, rowing is more than just a sport. There's something about being in a boat struggling against a river's current that gives the Crew team an exciting challenge that many sports don't offer. The Crew club offers many teams for everyone to get involved in. There are varsity, junior varsity, and novice teams for both men and women. There can be either eight or four people rowing at a time. "It's a team sport" said Rick Bach- man, an oarsman on last years team. "But it's also highly individual. It takes a lot of concentration and timing." THE CREW team is ideal for people who want to get into shape. The team works out everyday lifting weights, running, and rowing in the IM pool and eventually on the Huron River. "The practices are hard, but it's always fun," said Lisa Irwin, also a member of last year's team. "We aim to do well but it's not like a varsity sport where you have to win." The races, ranging anywhere from 800 to 2,500 meters take about five or eight minutes to complete. "If the water is flat and there isn't much current the race will go quickly, but if the river is choppy it's like rowing up hill" said Bachman. THE TEAM will be going to Canada and also to the Head of the Charles in Boston, one of the biggest races in the U.S. Races are usually run in the fall and spring. This year's team is trying to raise money to replace some of the outdated equipment, such as boats and paddles The boats are made of thin wood an* can be easily broken; however, despite their light weight, they do not tip over very easily. Like a lot of the club sports, you don't hear much about the crew team, but it's a contemplative and exciting sport. ALL CAMPUS INDEPENDENT Track............Thursday, Sept.-18 Golf ..................
