These dedicated sail- ors remain active well into the fall, meeting two or three times a week. They compete in races every Sunday afternoon. The club owns a 14 boat fleet. i fal By KIM HANAFkE For most University students, sailing becomes a dead sport when they return to Ann Arbor for the academic year. But for the Michigan sailing club, the sport is still very much alive. Rigging the boom and setting sail in the months of September and October, say club members, is not the symptom of some dreaded disease. Sandy Hubar, the club's public relations director, says that the short jaunt out to Base Line Lake each weekend and a pleasant day on the water is not just a summer hap- pening. Base Line Lake is the place where club members participate in Saturday morning classes conducted by a Boat School, and in Sunday afternoon races, using boats from the Club fleet of 14 In- ternational 470's. Concerning the novice sailor, Hubar states, "The more you come out to sail, the quicker you become more proficient in manuevering the boats. We also have meetings Thursday night at 7:45 at 311 West Engineering where besides going over general business, we have a lec- ture or a film dealing with all aspects of sailing, from basic to racing, learning to sail, the different types of boats which are used." The club sails into November, until the lake begins to freeze up. They are not lax during the winter months, however. Ice boating is popular among the diehard sailors, until spring weather permits the club to set sail on the water once again. Hubar added that "for those people without cars, a ride system is worked out at each meeting. Everybody is welcome to join and get away from the pressures of school for a day or two. It's a good way to relax."
