Johnson, the Buckeyes' second-string , ilback, burst 3 yards for the touch- down that brought Ohio State a 22-21 lead late in the third quarter in the st quarter, and less than two minutes later, he passed five yards to another tight end, Chris Jilleba, for a 14-0 lead. Ohio State, a 31-8! victor over Syracuse in the 1979 opener; managed only three first-half field goals of 35,34 and 42 yards by Vlade Janakievski. Illinois 20, Mich. St. 17 CHAMPAIGN (AP)-Illinois place Big Ten Roundup season opener for both teams. WARNER THREW 21 yards to tight end Tony Sidor with 10:47 left in the fir- kicker Mike Bass booted a 38-yard ield goal as time ran out to give the Illini a 20-17 victory yesterday over Michigan State. The Spartans had tied the game a few minutes earlier on Morten Andersen's 35-yard field goal, but Illinois quarter- back Dave Wilson guided his team into position for Bass' second field goal as the final seconds ticked off the clock. A CROWD OF 46,337 watched the see- saw battle between the Big Ten rivals. Illinois scored the first touchdown and appeared to be in control of the game, but the Spartans tied the score just before the half on a tricky pass and lateral play. The Illini took an early third-quarter lead with Bass' first, kick, but MSU went ahead with a touchdown late in the quarter. Illinois recaptured the lead with a TD early in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans tied it with Andersen's boot. The victory was° the second of the year for Illinois without a loss. It was the first game of 1980 for the Spartans. Purdue 12, Wisconsin 6 MADISON (AP)-Mark Herrmann passed for 347 yards to set up field goals of 30, 48, 19 and 40 yards by Rick Ander- son, leading 20th-ranked Purdue to a 12- 6 victory over Wisconsin yesterday. Herrmann, who had a sprained thumb and didn't play in the Boiler- makers' season-opening 31-10 loss to Notre Dame a week earlier, picked apart Wisconsin's defense by com- pleting 27 of 43 passes. THE HEISMAN TROPHY candidate, who injured a leg and was helped from the field with 1:28 to play, completed 13 passes to split end Bart Burrell for 190 yards. (AP-Untested quar- terback Bob Hewko passed for two touchdowns and 146 yards to lead the Florida Gators to a 41-13 victory over California that gave second-year Coach Charley Pell his first Gator win, in both teams opener yesterday. Florida was 0-10-1 in Pell's first year, with the coach using several different quarterbacks. The Gator victory spoiled a standout performance by California senior quar- terback Rich Campbell, who completed 43 of 53 passes for 422 yards.
