Washtenaw Place I I IMMMM~ M o The good, the bad, and Michigan .football... the ugly of THE GOOD The sight of an alumni couple walking through their past while tailgating near Michigan Stadium ... Another sight, that of the players leaping at the 'M' Club banner after they've streaked out from the tunnel on the east side of the stadium... Those few bars of "M Fanfare," which seem to get the blood circulating in every fan on every afternoon ... Bo letting some of his "demo team" members get a chance at the big time after they've built up an insurmount- able lead-... Bob Ufer. As much as reporters value their objectivity, "Ufe" is the best at catering to his audience-the emotional, boisterous alumni who would give their right arm to save the cause of Maize and Blue ... Weber's Inn. The friendly people at this west side hotel have been in- strumental in making Michigan foot- ball the big event every autumn weekend in southeastern Michigan . . Any instance in which the pigskin is breeze and a thirst that can be quen- ched by a cold beer ... Anybody hawking T-shirts, buttons, rain ponchos, hats, leaflets, "I'm behind Michigan" panties, or other assorted paraphenalia ... The cider barrel in front of Tice's Men's Store on South University. If Alan Fangerg tossed, launched, gyrated, or otherwise propelled into the air. Doesn't happen much, but that's probably why we value it so much more ... A crystal-clear ,day with a fresh -~ you've ever been there, you know what I mean... . The now-famous post-game show per- formed by the Michigan Marching Band, especially when it blasts out "Temptation" and "The Hawaiian War Chant." THE BAD The hype and overcommercialization that has come 'to characterize the Michigan football program ... The fact that sophomores and juniors often get better priority seating than their senior and graduate student coun- terparts ... The absurd method by which the football team currently receives academic assistance. It fails to address the real problem confronting these athletes ... the (in)ability to attain the level of motivation necessary to achieve enrichment in the class- room... The veil of privacy that Bo Schem- bechler casts over his team. It is more a paranoia than a justified concern about the possible ramification(s) of having bookmakers watch the practices-... The rancid food which is served at the games. Has anyone ever thought about boycotting? THE UGLY The passing up of women against their will. It's refreshing to see so many people make a concerted effort to end the practice... The day Bo Schembechler pushed former Daily sports writer Dan Perrin after Perrin had asked the coach a logical question about the then-ailing kicking game.. . The day Schembechler suspended five of his players for drug use. The matter was handled in an absurd fashion by not only the coaching staff and Athletic Director Don Canham, but by University administrators as well.... The refusal on the part of the athletic department to finance the Marching Band's trips -to Notre Dame and Ohio State.
