Waking up in Ann Arbor on a football Saturday and seeing both sides of the street lined with people streaming to the heart makes a hangover seem like a welcome respite. It's back to bed for a little while. People. All sorts of people flowing down the streets with all the fluidity of a massive bloodclot. Slowly, jerkily they wind their way to the heart, the enor- mous, all encompassing heart-Michigan Stadium: Young kids with outdated long hair and pants that wrap around low on their waists, students ranging from clean cut frater- nity men to General Joe Average and his buddies to Susie (you're so sweet and innocent) to Janie (you're sa fun and abusive) and last but neverleast, alumni dressed in yellow pants and maize and blue caps carrying coolers, shaking hands and teasing with relatives or old Greek brothers. THE WALK TO the stadium is filled with typical Ann Arbor diversity. Inevitably there is someone-a socialist maybe, or an anti-socialist, nukey, anti- nukey, scientology major or an em- ployee from the Mellowed Out Co- Existence Bagel Shop all shoving in your face some bulletin or pamphlet or menu which you glance at briefly and then throw away. Along the way as you pass by Elbel Field, you can usually observe a rugby match taking place. The ancient game offers a nice contrast. Before entering the shiny new modern stadium and gazing at the splashy bright colors of today's uniforms amidst the sound of the glorious marching bands, you first see the rugby players clad in black shorts and odd colored jerseys grunting and groaning over a heavy leather ball on barren Elbel Field. IT'S SORT OF like walking from the past to the present in the world of foot- ball. Once at the stadium, the scene is equally as hectic as the walk to it was. And again, the reason is the huge is preserved on 1rimm MR O The Michigan Daily 420 Maynard Street AND Graduate Library throngs of people. Michigan Stadium officially holds 101,701 people, but each week there's always an announced at- tendance of around 104,500 people. If you're a student, getting to your seat is no problem if you get there early. If not, then forget about sitting in your assigned seat unless you're quite fond of fist fights and good at them. You just have to go sit in someone else's place and hope that person isn't a master chef with knuckle sandwiches. The game itself, however, can often be worth the hassle. The quality of Wolverine football is superb even if Michigan never wins any bowl games. But someday, you'll undoubtedly be too tired, too hung over, or just not in the mood to go see that day's game. At that point all you have to do is go out, grab a bite to eat at the Mellowed Out Co-Existence Bagel Shop and then go back to bed for a little while. BIG 11 I is the ~h that shod the f of the !
