Bengals bombed by Birds OTHER CHANGES POSSIBLE Bo hedges on QB starter 19 The Baltimore Orioles scored four runs before anyone was retired in the first inning last night at Tiger Stadium to bury the Tigers in a hole they could never fight out of, as Detroit lost the opening game of a twinbill 9-2. The O'rioles' leadoff hitter Al Bumbry got things started with a double and Lenn Sakata followed with a walk. Ken Singleton delivered the Orioles' first run with a single scoring Bumbry and noving Sakata to third. This set the stage fpr Eddie Murray's three run homer that gave the Orioles a 4-0 cushion. After that, Tiger manager Spar y Anderson decided he had seen enough of Tiger starter Milt Wilcox, as he summoned reliever Roger Weaver from the bullpen. Wilcox was the even- tual loser in the game, leaving his record at 13-10. The Tigers were only able to muster single runs off of Baltimore pitching, in the first and sixth innings. Rick Peters led off the first inning with a double off of Orioles' starter Dennis Martinez. With one out Tim Corcoran's single plated Peters for the first Tiger run. That was the only action the Tigers could mount until the sixth, when Peters led off with a walk. A base hit by Alan Trammell moved Peters to third and Corcoran recorded his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly, making the score 4-2. Still with only one out, Martinez proceeded to walk Champ Summers, moving Trammell to second. Baltimore manager Earl Weaver op- ted to bring in Sammy Stewart to put out the Tiger fire. Stewart was suc- cessful in striking out Lance Parrish and John Wockenfuss to end the inning. Stewart proceeded to allow the Tigers just one hit over the final three innings in saving the game for Martinez. The win raised Martinez' record to 5-3 on the year. All Campus soccer entries are also due tomorrow. The Daily will publish an updated version of entry deadlines beginning in latter part of the week. i The Ferry F ield varsity running track has been closed indefinitely due to repair work, a spokesman for the In- iramural and Recreational Sports Department said yesterday. Hewlett was labeled the first-string quarterback after spring practice. "WE'RE IN A POSITION where we've been working with three guys and because of circumstances ... I don't want to declare myself," Schembechler told reporters at the first media luncheon of the season. But Schembechler quickly added that he doesn't believe "the quarterback spot will be a difficult spot for us at all." Schembechler explained that Wangler has fully recovered from the effects of a knee injury he suffered in the Gator Bowl. As late as last spring, doctors were un- sure that he could ever play football again. SMITH, MEANWHILE, HAS impressed the coaching staff with his ability to execute the option attack. The Wolverine coach 'said Smith drove his squad 80 yards for a touchdown in a scrimmage "and looked real good." A shoulder injury has kept Smith out of several scrim- mages, however. Wangler has not absor ed a hit during fall practice, but Schembechler doesn't "think he's lost that much (mobility)." He cautiously added, however, that "I 0 Saturday's scrimmage and is listed as "questionable" for the Northwestern contest. If Carter is kept out of the game, sophomore Kenney Gear will get the starting nod. Schembechler added that junior Fred Brockington "could see some action" if Carter sits out the game. "Carter's injury is not as severe as we thought," said the 12th-year mentor. MIDDLE GUARD: Tony Kelsie, a junior who, was sidelined all of last season with a pinched nerve in his neck, is now the leading candidate to start at that position. Kelsie is being given a battle for the spot by sophomoreWinfred Carraway. STRONG SAFETY: Sophomore Jeff Cohen is "neck- and-neck" in a battle with Jeff Reeves for the number one spot, said Schembechler. Reeves was the starter coming out of spring drills, but Cohen has impressed Schembechler with his speed and intelligent play. PUNTING/PLACEKICKING: Freshman Don Bracken out of Thermopolis, WY. has the inside track on a starting spot. Bracken averaged more than 47 yards per punt in three attempts Saturday. Schembechler also said he is "leaning towards" Ali-Haji-Sheikh as the star- tiang placekicker.a I Ib 11 A AR 104 GRIDDE PICKS ^ -r a, " . "t [^ .4 92 ;1- 4y, 4. , . .4.. . . ". . 9 .
