(AP)-Mike urey, Notre Dame's "mystery-man" arterback, threw for one touchdown and ran for another yesterday and Phil Carter rushed for 142 yards to lead the 11th-ranked Irish to a 31-10 victory over Purdue. The Irish had the advantage before the game started as Mark Herrmann, Purdue's passing great, was unable to play because of a sprained thumb suf- fered in practice earlier in the week. *Herrmann was replaced by freshman Cott; Campbell, who gave a good ac- count of himself and in one stretch completed 10 passes to lift the ninth- NCAA Roundup * nked Boilermakers from a 17-0 deficit to within 17-10 in the first half. Courey opened the second half with a 57-yard pass to Tony Hunter, and seven plays later, hit Hunter with a nine-yard touchdown pass, and the Boilermakers never recovered. Late in the fourth quarter, Courey scampered 14 yards around left end for a touchdown which clinched the out- come. N. Carolina 35, Furman 13 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP)-Tailbacks Amos Lawrence and Kelvin Bryant combined for more than 200 yards rushing and five touchdowns to spark No. 14 North Carolina to a 35-13 victory over Furman yesterday in the football opener for both teams. Lawrence, the nation's leading career rusher going into the 1980 season, gained 119 yards on 16 carries and scored the Tar Heels' first two touchdowns, both in the first quarter. Bryant, a sophomore, gained 105 yar- ds on 17 carries and added three touch- downs. Big Ten Standings Penn St. 54, Colgate 10 STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)- Sophomore Curt Warner scored three touchdowns and gained 149 yards on 10 carries as Penn State's "team of redemption" opened the 1980 college football season yesterday with a 54-10 route of Colgate. Coach Joe Paterno's Penn State team, riddled with dissension last year and out of the Top Ten for only the third time in 13 years, ran up a 31-10 half- tine lead and coasted to an easy trium- Penn State led 14-0 after a period on touchdown runs of 58 and 11 yards by Warner.
