(AP)-The sprawling University of Massachusetts campus resembled a ghost town yesterday as fewer than 700 students remained to brave a water shortage that sent about 14,000 of their classmates streaming back to their homes. Without the students, who were sent home Thursday, the water shortage eased and town officials lifted a ban on water use. They said supplies should be back to normal today. THE UNIVERSITY USES about half of the 3.4 million gallons of the water consumed daily in the town, and water use has become a hot political issue as the university grew during the past decade. A gentle rain fell on parched reser- voirs last yesterday morning. Town of- ficials said additional water supplies from a reserve well in neighboring Hadley should provide sufficient water to allow the students to return on Sun- day. Taps in 70 per cent of the school's 51 dormitories were dry when Chancellor Henry Koffler cancelled classesshortly before noon Thursday and ordered the dormitories, which house 14,000 of the school's 19,000 students, closed. SIX HOURS LATER, most of the dormitory residents, some with knap- sacks on their backs and others laden with overnight bags, had left by car, bus, thumb or bicycle for a long weekend at home or in camps in the green hills of Vermont. University officials said nearly 2,500 students were evacuated by 50 buses that took them to Worcester or Boston, where the university draws the bulk of its students. AP Photo THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS arrange transportation out of the U-Mass. at Amherst, where a severe water shortage has forced the school to close. With just a few hundred students remaining, and a slightly replenished reservoir after a morning rain, those still in Amherst are rreportedly enjoying the return of a water supply. For about 400 resident assistants, who were ordered to stay, and about 300 foreign students and others who had no place to go, it was a lonely night. ONLY SCATTERED PINPOINTS of light could be seen in the towering 22- story dormitory towers. One dorm complex, which normally houses 2,200 students, had less than 40 students. "It's nice and quiet and relaxing. But when you are used to seeing thousands of students around it's like walking through a ghost town. It can really get to you if you are not with someone," said Joe Bailey, a student from Wayland. Bailey, who works for the student newspaper, was one of a doten students left in a dormitory that normally houses 350. TOWN AND UNIVERSITY officials sought to place blame for the shortage. Although Koffler said he first learned of the shortage Wednesday night, Amher- st Town Manager A. Louis Hayward said he sent U-Mass officials a letter two weeks earlier, warning that the dry hot summer weather could produce water shortages. "Historically water has been a problem in the town," said Chuck Lacey, who heads the newly forme. Amherst Town. Water Conservatioi Project. "We are a small town with small reservoirs and if it doesn't rain for six weeks they dry up. We've been taking a gamble for years with the ex- pansion of the university." _n r a r & S Q O to \ BOSTON including: More Than A Feeling/Peace Of Mind Foreplay/Long Time/Smokin'/Hitch A Ride PINK FLOYD WISH YOU WERE HERE including: Shine On You < Crazy Diamond Welcome To The Machine :.
