State, * n McGee puts on show .. ...during boring gam es,'yBDYMOEOS By BUDDY MOOREHOUSE If you were one of the many Michigan cage fans who decided not to attend the last two Wolverine routs over Akron and Kent State, you missed a great show. True, the games were one-sided and boring, but that wasn't the great show. It was worth the price of admission in the last two games to see Mike McGee. The senior sensastion added excitement to the two sleepers as he tossed in 35 points against Akron on Monday, and notched 30 points on Wed- nesday against the Golden Flashes. Those performances gave McGee 1,835 total points for his career and put him in second place on the all-time scoring list, ahead of Rudy Tomjanovich. If he keeps up his torrid pace, McGee should easily surpass the great Caz- zie Russell's career total of 2,164 points. McGee has always been a scoring machine. In past years the Wolverine offense consisted of passing the ball around for a while until McGee got open, at which time he would plop in a 20-footer with uncanny regularity. The only problem was, McGee was a one, dimensional player-all scoring and not much else. This year, though, McGee has become much more of a well-rounded player, a fact which poses problems for any team facing Michigan. Against Kent State, McGee took only one shot from one outside-which he made-as he accumulated the bulk of his point total on breakaway layups and short- McGee range jumpers. Being able to score ... number 2 'M' scorer almost at will from the inside has Madded an entirely new dimension to McGee's offensive ability. While he hasn't lost any of his outside shooting ability, McGee has added a potent in- side game. McGee's traditional weakness has been defense. Before the season began, coach Bill Frieder said "One of my main objectives for this year is to get Mike to play more consistent defense." So far, it would appear that Frieder is succeeding. Against Kent State, McGee made four steals, all of which he converted into easy baskets, and more importantly, he fouled out. It may seem strange to view fouling out as a positive factor, but it shows that McGee is working much harder on his defensive work. McGee'seems happy with his performance thus far. "I've been shooting pretty well from the floor, making some steals, and playing some good defense," said the 6-5 Omaha native. "But I could be shooting better from the free throw line." It seems characteristic of McGee this year to never be fully satisfied with his game. McGee also has shown none of the attitude problems which plague such glamour collegiate hoopsters as DePaul's Mark Agguire, taking the opinion that because the team can't win without him, he can act any way he pleases. McGee works as hard as anyone in practice, and shows remarkable intensity against weak teams which predictably could precipitate a mental letdown, such as Akron or Kent State. The remarkable improvement in McGee's play means that the Wolverines will probably cruise through the rest of their pansy non-conference schedule undefeated, continue to rise in the national polls, and then make a run at the - Big Ten title, something not many people gave them a chance to do before the season began. And although it won't be easy, if Frieder continues to im- prove all other aspects of the team; a spot in the NCAA thurnament should belong to the Wolverines. 4 -e Tune in 0 90 - :*** these. holiday specials -*t o 000 .r0 R k HI ROSHIMA- Odori includes: LONELY TOGETHER I MADE IT THROUGH THE RAIN BERMUDA TRIANGLE Senior saluted' To the Daily: Monday evening (December 1) at the Plaza Hotel we were most favorably impressed by the sincerity of the thanks from the seniors. After so much un- pleasantness in the media about schools where athletes don't get degrees (and nobody cares), it is tremendous to hear the importance Michigan athletes place on education. But outstanding of the group was the testimony of Jim Breaugh. We could all wish that you, Jim, could have had even a minute in Michigan Stadium, but we were highly impressed with this man who emerged from the Michigan foot- ball program. All of us who heard Bo realize how much credit he gave to the men who put forth so much during practice but then don't get on the field on Saturday. We salute them and especially you, Jim, for hanging in there through it all. -Grant L. Trigger Barbara J.
