people who have just one house that
they want to rent out. They are
generally eager to cooperate once
they find out about the problem."
The unenforceable clause problem
is much less prevalent now, accor-
ding ,to Williams. "Things naturally
reached a head at the time PIRGIM
published those survey results," she
said. "They used the data to help get
the Truth In Renting Act passed."
SEVERAL AREA landlords said
they did not mind having tenants
question some of the lease clauses.
"Our lease is sound, so we don't
mind having people take a look at
it," said McKinley Properties Cam-
pus Rental Manager Jan Austin.
A few years ago, a McKinley lease
won the PIRGIM-sponsored "Worst
Lease" contest when it was found to
have 13 illegal, unenforceable
clauses. "We never found out what
lease they were talking about,"
Austin said.
McKinley registers with the Off-
Campus Housing Office, Austin said.
The Truth in Renting Act did little to
change their lease, she said, because
"there wasn't anything in there that
wasn't supposed to be."
