The Michigan Daily Sunday, December 7, 1980 Blue icers scalp N.D. Sioux, 8-2 Page 9 By KENT WALLEY Two very physical hockey teams met at Yost Ice Arena last night. One of them filled the penalty box and lacked offense throughout most of the night. The.other put on a dazzling display of scoring - both on the power play and evenly-manned. Michigan was the prevailing team, defeating the North Dakota Sioux by a convincing score of 8-2 before 5,214 screaming Wolverine fans. THE BLUE icers totally dominated the 'first two periods, scoring four power play goals and shutting out the opposition. The third beriod went much the same way. With penalties playing a major role, Michigan scored four times evenly-manned, and North Dakota scored twice, both times shorthanded. l Michigan opened the third period with a score when Mars took a pass on a breakaway and fired a slapshot over North Dakota goalie Darren Jensen's ' shoulder. Then, 11 seconds later, Bour- ne skated in front of the Sioux net and flipped yet another shot past Jensen. But North Dakota was not ready to lay down and die. On a Michigan'power play, the, scored two short-handed oals. The first was a slapshot from the ot by right winger Glen White. The second came at 5:14 when left wing Ed- die Christian broke away from the pack and broke to the left of the net. Then, af- ter Fricker was committed to that side, he passed the puck to the right, and cen- ter Dean Barsness flicked the puck cleanly into the net. THE GOALS WERE useless, however, because Michigan; near the 12-minute mark, scored two goals in a matter of 16 seconds to put the game out of reach. Hampson scored first (unassisted) when he skated at Jensen and fired a slap shot, unchallenged, by a defender. The goalie couldn't quite reach the puck, and it bounced off his glove' and into the net. The other goal was scored by Tim Manning at 12:04. In the second period Michigan took advantage of numerous North Dakota penalties and scored three power play goals, running up the Wolverine lead to 4-0. Slapshot after slapshot winged past Jensen, as the Blue powerplay ap- peared unstoppable. ,The Wolverines' only close call oc- curred after both Richter and Milburn were penalized (for roughing and delay of game). Also whistled for delay of' game was the Sioux' Carroll. With a four-to-three man advantage, North Dakota applied pressure at the Wolverine end. BUT GOALIE Paul Fricker an- swered with several aerobatic saves. Then North Dakota right wing Cary Eades, fired a slapshot from the slot that Fricker blocked with his skate. Center Troy ,Murray,'quickly smashed the deflected puck toward the Blue net, but Fricker, reacting in a split second, dove and deflected the puck with his stick. Two of the three power play goals were scored by Steve Richmond. The first, at 7:11, was scored when Rich- mond made a strong move to the inside and flicked the puck past Jensen from the slot. The other was a slapshot from -the point. DESPITE A highly physical and ac- tion-packed first period, only one goal - which put the Wolverines into an early 1-0 lead - was scored. Michigan coach John Giordano was pleased with the Wolverine performan- ce. But North Dakota coach John Gasparini had a different view of the game. He called the officiating "the poorest we've had all year." He added that "when you get seven .straight penalties called on you, something is wrong. The officials didn't beat us, but they were the deciding factor." Sioux black and bglue FIRST PERIOD Scoring: 1. M-Hampson (Tippett) 4:50.
