Harper, a sophomore helping to fill in for the injured Mar- cus Allen, put the Trojans ahead to stay when he raced six yards for a touchdown with 8:23 remaining inthe second period. The defeat _almost certainly ended Notre Dame's hopes for a national championship as the Irish fell to 9-1-1. Notre Dame meets top-ranked Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, Jan. 1. Harper's second touchdown came on a 10-yard jaunt that climaxed a 70-yard drive with 1:09 remaining in the game. The nationally televised contest played before a crowd of 82,663 at the Los Angeles Coliseum marked the final-regular- season game as Irish coach for Dan Devine, who announced earlierhe was retiring at the end of the campaign. Hipp added a 22-yard field goal later in the second quar- ter to give Southern Cal, which finished its season with an 8-2- I record and snapped a two-game losing streak, a 10-0 lead at the intermission. Harry Oliver cut the difference to seven points when he kicked a 30-yard field goal with less than a minute remaining in the third period. The three-pointer came after the Trojans' defense had twice stopped Notre Dame near the USC goal line, including one stand that began when the Irish had first and goal at the Southern Cal three-yard line. Banks set up Hipp's second field, goal when he intercep- - ted a Mike Courey pass at midfield and returned it -to the Notre Dame one-yard line. F.lorida St. 17, Florida 13 6 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. While Stockstill generated some life into the Seminoles' of- fense, which was limited to 89 yards in the first half, the, rugged Florida State defense, which surrendered 226 yards in the first two periodIs, held Florida's Gators to just 40 in the, final 30 minutes and preserved its brilliant record of not, yielding a point in the fourth period all season. Hearns posted his 28th knockout in running his record to a perfect 30-0 when he dropped the 30-year-old and previously undefeated Venezuelan for the third time in the fight. The 22-year-old Hearns decked Primera-who now sports a 15-1 record with 12 knockouts--with a powerful short right to the body that crumpled. the Caracas native. With the knockout,, Hearns retained the WBA crown he captured with a second-round knockout of Pipino Cuevas in the same Joe Louis Arena before his hometown fans.; It was only the fourth time that a Hearns fight has lasted more than four rounds, but the first that did not go the scheduled distance after passing that mark. Primera opened the fight with a strong forward rush and flurry of pun- ches that kept Hearns at bay through BILLBOARDX The finals of the Intramural Depar- tment's All-Campus Superstar League playoffs begin tonight, at 6:30 at the I.M.' In that round, the champion took more punches than in any of his previous fights. , Hearns took command in the second, scoring at will, and recorded his first eight-count knockdown in the third round. Hearns began circling Primera in an almost-mocking manner in the fourth and used a penetrating left jab in sear ch of an opening to end the bout. One round later, Hearns scored his second knockdown with a string of lefts to the body and a pair of rights to the head. Hearns, his anger boiling over into a few post-fifth round hits on the Venezuelan, stalked the previously un- defeated challenger grimly through the first minute of the sixth round befoe chalkic g up his 30th victory without defeat. Primera, in his first appearance outside his native country, fell to 15-1. Neither fighter appeared to be doing much damage through the final round but suddenly Hearns flicked a left toward Primera's face and then followed with a right to the challenger's left side that put him down. It appeared at first Primera would rise again and continue making a joke of the vaunted Hearns on his own Joe Louis Arena turf but referee Ismael Fernandez of Santurce, Puerto Rico, 4 ruled he had reached the count of 10 before the Venezuelan had reached his feet. Hearns, who at times toyed with Primera by dancing clockwise around him and clicking annoying but ineffec- tive lefts at his opponent's face, fights Wilfred Benitez in New York in late February and hopes to use a quick win against the ex-champion as the step that will force a bout with WBC welter- weight title holder Sugar Ray Leonard. But the Primera victory did not add any gloss to Hearns' reputation. "He ain't looking good," manager- trainer Emanuel Steward said of his premier fighter as he followed Hearns to the dressing room. "He's too cocky. "He didn't look good at all. He's get- ting too cocky." I E £4r43rn of M. You can have the U. Next year you could be on scholarship. An Air Force ROTC 2-year scholarship.
