GARLAND, 1-0, pitched out of trouble in the fifth after Ted Simmons singled with one out for the Brewers' second hit, and took second on a single by Gorman Thomas. However, Don,Money flied to deep center for the second out. First baseman Mike Hargrove then made a diving stab of Jim Gantner's hard grounder, which seemed headed for the right field corner, and threw .to Garland covering the bag to retire the side. Ben Oglivie doubled leading off the Brewer seventh, but the next three hitters were routine outs. In the bottom of the ninth, Cecil Cooper led off with a single, stole second and took third on an infield out. But Garland preser- ved his victory by striking out Larry Hisle and getting Simmons to ground out, ending the game. TAKE 1-0 LEAD: 0 Islanders destroy Oilers UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP)-John Tonelli, Hector Marini and Denis Pot- vin-each connected for goals in a one- minute, 44-second span of the second pelod last night to lead the New York Islanders to an 8-2 National Hockey League quarterfinal playoff romp over e Edmonton Oilers. The defending Stanley Cup champion Islanders grabbed a 1-0 lead in the best- of-seven series, which continues here tonight. EDMONTON, which finished 14th in overall league standings this season, kept pace with New York through one period. Then the Islanders exposed the weak and inexperienced Oilers' defense that had performed so well in Edmon- ton's three-game preliminary round sweep of Montreal. Bob Nystrom opened the scoring with a breakaway tally 3:14 into the game. Nystrom, a Stanley Cup hero for New York last spring when he scored the championship-winning goal, took a pin- point pass from Garry Howatt and beat Moog with a backhander. With 45 seconds remaining in the first period, the Oilers' defense vacated the area in front of Moog just as the Islan- ders' Butch Goring captured the puck behind the Edmonton net. Goring dashed unchecked in front and pushed a forehand shot past Moog. THEN CAME the second-period blitz that gave the Islanders their fourth consecutive playoff rout-they smashed Toronto 9-2, 5-1 and 6-1 in the opening round. Wayne Gretzky, the NHL scoring king, had several excellent scoring op- portunities in the first period. But Islanders goaltender Billy Smith th- warted Gretzky twice. Gretzky did manage to: score Ed- monton's first goal on a power play at 8:06 of the middle session. mo '''
