TheMih Daily-Friday April 7198-P '. rte::.. E. I hilly Orchestra springs back By JANE CARL What's more than 100 members strong and returns to Ann Arbor each spring with such regularity that the swallows at Capistrano have reason to be jealous? It's the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Eugene Ormandy perfor- ming at the 88th annual May Festival. The Philadelphia Orchestra first performed in Ann Arbor in 1913 and 1914, and joined the May Festival lineup in 1936 under the baton of Leopold Stowkowski. In 1937 Ormandy succeeded Stowkowski and has been with the orchestra in Ann Arbor consecutively for 44 years. AN IMPRESSIVE LIST of works and performers 'accom- panies this year's festival. Highlights of the week should be the Mozart "Exultate, jubilate," on the April 29 concert, the Bruch "Violin Concerto in G minor," on the April 30 concert, the Mozart "Symphony No. 41," on the May 1 concert, and both the Bartok "Piano Concerto No. 3," and the "Concerto for Orchestra," on the final May 2 concert. Guests with the orchestra include Conductor Aldo Ceccato, music director of the Hamburg Philharmonic and formerly with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He will be conducting the April 30 and May 1 concerts. Violinist Ani Kavafian, a native of Royal Oak, will be making her Ann Arbor debut on April 30 with the Bruch concerto. A former pupil at the University-affiliated Interloeb~en National Music, Camp, Kavafian is the winner of many prestigious string prizes. Also, an array of internationally known soloists will be on hand for the May 1 production of Rossini's "Stabat Mater," including Faye Robinson, Katherine Ciesinski, John Gilmore, and John Cheek. Of course, the special treat of the week should be soprano Judith Blegen's opening night concert. Appearing earlier this year opposite Luciano Pavarotti on PBS in Donizetti's "Elixir of Love," (which will be performed in English on April 23 by the Western Opera Theater at the Power Center), Blegen displayed her captivating stage presence and com- pelling artistry. THE FINAL MAY 2 concert is both a tribute and a reunion for pianist Gyorgy Sandor and the orchestra. Sandor, a student of Bartok in their native Hungary and currently a professor at the School of Music, premiered the monumental "Piano Concerto No. 3," with the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1946, shortly after the composer's death. They also made the first recording of the piece. There could be no more fitting way to end the year long international Bartok Festival and the May Festival than with such a definitive performance of Bartok's music by a conductor who is a fellow countryman and a contemporary and a pianist who is a former student and the recipient of the Grand Prix du Disque for recording the complete piano literature of Bartok. .ri f. . .. ..: ::,.Y.n :..:Y.. :. ..:. .. .L , . ..: .. .n .Y .. .. ../Y . .: .. .... ., .. ... < L. .S ...n4q .. .241 YS C M. .., ....C., .lS:..:r?". ,.. .. We depend on her to link this production together but she doesn't have the spirit. Her rapport with Giza is very effective, but she never deals with the character *face to face until the end: All their early communication is through letters and phone calls, which are read or spoken §6raight put to the audience.. iNanc Heusel, on the other hand, is perfect as Giza, the poised sister. The cbncern, the elegance-with her eferything is as it should be. Paula is one of those delightfully malicious Eve Baxterish roles but Kendra Chopcian only boringly bats her eyelashes a few times and Victor is hers. No fun. And H. D. Cameron as the corpulent Victor is a bit too obvious about sticking his pad- ded stomach out, but he does portray the character in an appropriately dislikable fashion. One word about Phylis Ward Fox as Mousie; she is delightful here as usual, as Ersike's meek next door neighbor, who unleased, will gladly tell you the story about who her husband kicked her out without a stitch of clothing or will meow happily at your doorstep as she does at Ersike's. Fox played a wonder- ful bitch in Table Manners earlier this year, and here she's no less enjoyable - a completely maleable performer.
