By RON POLLACK First of a two-part series A Daily Sports Analysis Talent in college football seems to run in cycles. Nineteen seventy-one was an excellent year for quarterbacks, as Jim Plunkett, Archie Manning and Dan Pastorini were the first three athletes chosen in the annual National Football League player draft. In 1978 the spotlight was on wide receivers when James Lofton, Wes Chandler and John Jefferson were gobbled up early. And last season saw six defensive backs taken in the first round. So it comes as no surprise that the crop of players available for the up- coming April 28-29 draft again has an, overabundance of talent at one position. With Hugh Green, Lawrence Taylor, E.J. Junior, Ricky Jackson and Mel Owens all potential first-round draft choices, 1981 would seem to be the year of the outside linebacker. OUTSIDE LINEBACKER 1. Hugh Green-Pittsburgh 2. Lawrence Taylor-North Carolina 3., Ricky Jackson-Pittsburgh 4. E.J. Junior-Alabama 5. Mel Owens-Michigan Green is the most dominant defensive player in the draft. Only a small step behind him is Taylor, a bone-crushing tackler. Jackson possesses tremendous athletic talent and would have received much greater attention were he not overshadowed by Green. Owens' 4.68 speed in the 40 makes him one of the fastest linebackers to graduate in 1980. MIDDLE LINEBACKER 1. Mike Singletary-Baylor 2. Robin Sendlein-Texas 3, Steve Doolittle-Colorado 4. Jim Collins-Syracuse 5. Kent Klausen-Montana Singletary is an extremely intense player who does whatever it takes to win. He was a dominating player in college despite only standing 5'111/2". Sendlein is the exact opposite of Singletary. He is blessed with great size, but was inhibited by the disciplined Texas defense. Doolittle and Collins both hit well, but Doolittle has been hampered by hamstring problems, while Collins lacks some mobility. CORNERBACK 1. Ted Watts-Texas Tech 2. Hanford Dixon-Southern Mis- sissippi 3. Bobby Butler-Florida State 4. John Sinimons-SMU 5. Jeff Griffin-Utah Watts can do about everything a good defensive back must. His 4.5 speed in the 40 allows him to stay with the fastest of receivers, and he is also a ferocious hitter. Dixon anticipates well and makes a lbt of big plays. Butler is a sprinter on Florida State's track team. Combine his speed with his willingness to hit, and you have the best coverage man in the draft. Simmons has shown tremendous improvement for SMU, and although he is not a savage hitter, he gets the job done. Griffin has superb reactions and is a threat to intercept any sideline pass and return it for a touchdown. SAFETY 1. Kenny Easley-UCLA 2. Ronnie Lott--USC 3. Dennis Smith-USC 4. Don Washington-Texas A&I 5. Russell Gary-Nebraska Easley is a complete player. He is quick, agile, a hitter, and a superb special teams performer. Lott, like Easley, is everything a safety should be. He is an excellent blitzer and has great timing against the pass. he plays with intensity and always seems to be involved in the action. Although Smith is not in the same class as Easley and his teammate Lott, he comes close, with better size and speed than either of the first two. Washington missed the beginning of the year with a broken hand but has come back strong. DEFENSIVE END 1. Leonard Mitchell-Houston 2. Mike Robinson-Arizona 3. Keith Gary-Oklahoma 4. Greg Meisner-Pittsburgh 5. Ben Rudolph-Cal State-Long Beach Mitchell has super size and speed. At times he can dominate a game, but he does not always play up to his awesome potential. Robinson will be a 25-year-old rookie, so he will not have the luxury of gradual development. Robinson played well in the post season bowl games, which should move him up in the draft. Gary is a fine pass rusher but has had bad luck with injuries. f . f TOMORROW: Part 2 SCORES 0 American League Detroit 4, Kansas City 0 Chicago 5, Milwaukee 4 Boston 7,Baltimore 2 Texas 8, Cleveland 0 New York 6, Toronto 3 National League Montreal s,Chicago 4 New York 5, St. Louis 3 Houston 2, Atlanta 0 NBA Playoffs San Antonio 101, Houston 96 (series tied 3-3) Philadelphia 116, Milwaukee 99 (Philadelphia leads series 3-2) Motherwell volleys Continued from Page Five V clipped minimal effort into a grandly full-bodied declaration. The Chinese philosopher Chuang Tzu, a teacher of Taoism, once wrote an ac- count of a butcher with unheard-of abilities. His axe hand was so sure the man had used the same chopped for nineteen years. Every part of his stroke accomplished something pertinent to his task. One day he was asked, "How has your skill reached such height?" , "What I, your servant, like is Tao, which surpasses skill," the butcher replied. "When I first began to cut up oxen, all I could see was the ox itself. After three years, I no longer saw the whole ox. Now I get at it with my spirit and do not see with my eye. My sense perception stops but my spirit works voluntarily." Using the mind's eye, Motherwell distills his physical world. "As a result of the poverty of modern life, we are confronted with the circumstance that4 art is more interesting than life," he wrote in 1944. Which is not to say that his work excludes the physical world. With a cluster of strokes he makes a cogent statement on gravity; his selec- tions of inks and papers prvokes all sor- ts of sensual reactions. These works focus on elemental forces of the natural world, and on mental states and emotions prompted by it. This is the Motherwell work shown at the Simsar - the labor of the eye and the mind's eye in tandem, working instan- taneously.
