DETROIT-Pitching, not hitting, was the main concern of
the Tigers in spring training.
That concern paid off yesterday, as Sparky Anderson's
club received a solid route-going performance from
righthander Jack Morris, who held Toronto quiet until last
season's league-leading hitting arsenal got on track. That oc-
curred when Richie Hebner led a seventh inning barrage
with a game-winning three run homer to lead Detroit to a 6-2
opening game victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.
THE NEAR CAPACITY crowd of 51,452 at Tiger Stadium
had little to cheer for in the early going as both teams had
trouble offensively. Toronto had the game's first scoring op-
portunity in the second inning, courtesy of Kirk Gibson's first
fielding miscue. The ex-Michigan State football star had a
rough day on the outfield turf, misplaying three balls in right

field. However, the Blue Jays' early effort was thwarted
when Tiger third baseman Mick Kelleher shot down Wille
Upshaw at the plate.
Both teams then got on the board in the third frame. First
Toronto's John Mayberry knocked in Lloyd Moseby with a
sacrifice fly.
Then the Tigers retaliated with their first run of the season
in the bottom half of the inning. Ricky Peters led off by
drawing a walk off losing pitcher Joey McLaughlin. He was
advanced to third when Alfredo Griffin misplayed Alan
Trammell's ground ball. Peters then scored while Steve
Kemp was hitting into a double play.
Another Gibson goof set the stage for the Jays' second run,
for in the fifth inning Gibson misplayed an Earnie Whitt pop
up into a three base error. Whitt scored when Moseby drove a
long sacrifice fly to center field.
BUT, JUST AS was the case in the third inning, Detroit had
an aiswer for the Blue Jay rally in the bottom half of the fif-
th, when Trammell tripled down the
right field line and scored moments
later on a Kemp sacrifice fly.
After Morris set down the Blue Jays
in the sixth and seventh innings, the
stage was set for Hebner's late inning
heroics.
Lou Whitaker led off the Tigers' half
of the seventh with a double. Two outs
later, Toronto's skipper,"Bobby Mad-
dick, played the percentages and called
for left-handed reliever Mike Willis.
Willis obliged the Tigers by walking
Kemp. Hebner then promptly sent the
southpaw's fastball into the lower right
field bleachers for the decisive runs.
The Tigers received an insurance run
in the eighth inning when Kelleher laid
down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt,
which scored Al Cowens, who had
replaced Gibson.
Morris, who scattered five hits,
sealed the Tiger victory by retiring the
visitors in order in the final frame.
Detroit and Toronto have the day off
today but will conclude the three game
series tomorrow and Sunday.
