The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, January 13, 1981-Page 11 SPOR TS OF THE DAILY Tumblers take top spots By LARRY MISHKIN he Michigan men's gymnasts led the way at the Big Ten Invitational held at Michigan State this past weekend by winning four first places, a second place, and two third places in seven events. While the remainder of Michigan's scores were a bit lower, the team's per- formance was not a factor as only in- dividual results were recorded in the team event featuring Michigan te, Wisconsin, Western and Eastern Michigan, along with Michigan. First place performances were tur- ned in by Nevin Hedlund with a 9.05 on the pommel horse, Darrell Yee with an exceptional 9.55 on the rings, Kevin McKee with a 9.3 in the floor exercises, and Marshall Garfield with a 9.35 on the parallel bars. A 98.75 by Milan Stanovich was good for second place in the all-around competition and Garfield finished right behing him with a 97.75. cKee also had a third place in the aulting competition with a score of 9.45.'.' Coach Newt Loken said he was pleased with his gymnast's performan- ces but said that the team effort will have to be improved upon. "We cap- tured a good number of top spots, but not enough second and third places. We will have to work on this phase in order to post a serious challenge against our rthcoming competitors, all of whom BILLBOARD The University of Michigan Lacrosse Club will hold an organizational meeting tonight in Room 2230, CCRB at 8 p.m. This meeting will deal with club membership, as well as practice and season schedules. Loken did not however confine his praise only to his regulars as he spoke highly of the performances by reserves Stu Downing, Chip Davis, Lee Buck- man, John Castle, and Steve Schein- man, the five of whom were able to par- ticipate in the meet because of the open format. The Wolverine gymnasts travel to Champaign this weekend to take on a tough Illinois squad as the team portion of the 1981 phase of the season gets un- der way. Shea takes fourth The men's indoor track team opened it's season with a solid performance against representatives from over twenty schools at the East Tennessee Invitational last weekend. Mike Shea, who placed fourth in the half mile with'a time of 1:53.02, turned in a super performance according to coach Jack Harvey. However, Shea had a faster time, 1:52.09, in the preliminary heats held on Friday. Shea's time qualifies him to run in the NCAA meet to be held at Detroit in March. Michigan's mile relay team of Shea, Andrew Bruce, Shelby Johnson, and Ken Gardner came in fourth with a time of 3:14.07. Tennessee won the event turning in a time of 3:12.02 followed by Kansas, 3:12.25, and Villinova,3:12.50. Shea had the fastest sprint among the Wolverines. The thin- clads performance in the mile relay also qualified them to compete in the NCAA championships. Michigan broad jumper James Ross,, who qualified for the United States Olympic trials last year, placed third in the meet with a jump of 24'8 3/4". Harvey said that the Wolverine per-. formance was good for the time of year.. "Coming off break," said Harvey, "we did really well." The Wolverine. tracksters were hampered by the I MM slightly larger track, 1/6 mile, at East Tennessee. --J. CHAPELLE Kitchel honored CHICAGO (AP)-Indiana forward Ted Kitchel, turning in a brilliant per- formance by scoring 40 points against Illinois Saturday, has been named Big Ten basketball Player of the Week. Kitchel, a 6-8, 210-pound junior from Galveston, Ind., made 11 of 13 field goal attempts and connected on 18 of 18 from the free throw line as the Hoosiers buried the Illini 78-61. It marked only the second time in the last five years that a player has scored 40 points in a Big Ten game. Ironically, the last to do it was Indiana's Mike Woodson who poured in 48 points in 1978 against Illinois. Wilson (continued) URBANA, Ill.
