University at the corner of East U. and South U. 662-3201 A.L.0 By RON POLLACK A Daily Sports Analysis With the exception of some new faces, little seems to have changed in the American League West from last season. The California Angels will once again prove that money can't buy a cham- pionship. The Chicago White Sox will play tight defense about as often as a politician speaks out against gover- nmental corruption and really means it. Oakland manager Billy Martin will no doubt be involved in some sort of controversy. Seattle will be out of the running by the All-Star game. And the Kansas City Royals will run away with the division. 09... West: I achieved some long-sought respect las season, beating the New York Yankee: in the playoffs. Although the AL West had easily the most boring division race last year, it did supply the best individual perfor- mance in the person of George Brett (.390). Another terror at the plate was outfielder Willie Wilson. Wilson batted .326 and stole 79 bases, but itremains to be seen whether he can rebound from his horrendous World Series perfor- mance. Manning the outfield along with Wilson are Amos Otis (.251) and Clint Hurdle (.294). The designated hitter spot proved to be a productive one as Hal McRae hit .297 and knocked in 83 runs. The starting rotation for Kansas City is not one of their strengths, as beyond Dennis Leonard (20-11) and Larry Gura (18-10), the starters are mediocre at best in the persons of Rich Gale (13-9, 3.92 ERA) and Paul Splittorff (14-11, 4.15). However, the Royals possess one of baseball's best relievers in Dan Quisenberry (33 saves). OAKLAND-Oakland's nickname, the A's, should stand for the grade given to manager Billy Martin, rather than the Athletics. In one season, Mar- royal t tin took Oakland from the bottom s division to a surprising second finish. The A's won last season usin steal, hit-and-run and squeeze bu overcome a lack of power. An shortcoming of the A's was relievers, who resulted in the to starters being forced to finish an dinate amount of games. The sta are Mike Norris (22-9, 2.54 ERA), Langford (19-12, 3.26), Matt K (16-13, 2.92), Steve McCatty andI Kingman. THE A'S OUTFIELD of Rickey derson, Dwayne Murphy and Ton mas is quite imposing. Hendersor ted .303 and stole 100 bases, Arm 35 home runs and drove in 109 while Murphy won a Gold Glove. Kiox CHICAGO WHITE SOX CHICAGO-The White Sox clearly the West's most impr team. Under former owner Bill V money was limited and the prosper signing highly-regarded players slim. But now, as a result of an infl money from a new owner, the I Sox have signed free agents LeFlore and Carlton Fisk in additi obtaining Greg Luzinski Philadelphia for cash. With Fisk as the receiver, an ali talented pitching staff of Britt B Rich Dotson, Steve Trout and Baumgarten should improve. Th bullpen is also a source of strengti chored by Ed Farmer (30 saves). Joining LeFlore in the outfield w Chet Lemon (.292) and Harold Bi (.255). Chicago's inconsistent ir will be bolstered by' newcomer' Bernazard at second base. repeat of the place g the ant to other their eam's inor- arters , Rick eough Brian * Hen- CALIFORNIA-About the only con- iy Ar- solation the Angels can take from last n bat- year's disastrous 65-95 collapse is that as hit things seemingly can't get worse this runs year. Returning from injury will be out- fielders Dan Ford and Don Baylor, the league's MVP two seasons ago. Both of California's catchers, Brian Downing and Dave Skaggs, will also be back. The Angels will also be improved because of the acquisition of outfielder Fred Lynn from Boston and shortstop Rick Burleson from Boston. Joining Burleson in the infield will be Rod Carew at first, Bobby Grich at second and Butch Hobson at third. are oved eeck, cts of$0 KANSAS CITY-The Royals finally TUESDAY LUNCH-DISCUSSION TODAY, APRIL 7-12 NOON "EL SALVADOR AND CENTRAL AMERICA: The Other Side of the Story" Speaker: ARTHUR BOYD, Do a Tree a Favor: Recycle Your Daily Director, Human Services in Lenawee County at the INTERNATIONAL CENTER 603 E. Madison Street For information, call 662-5529 Co-sponsored by the Ecumenical Campus Center MINNESOTA-Despite losing a number of its stars to free agency over the past few years, the Twins will still field a respectable team. Third baseman John Castino (.302), shortstop Roy Smalley (.278), second baseman Rob Wilfong (.248) and either Ron Jackson (.265) or newly acquired Mickey Hatcher (.226) make up one of the best infields in the league. The trade sending Ken Landreaux (.281) to Los Angeles for Hatcher caused the Twins' outfield to become a question mark. Minnesota's starting pitching rotation of Jerry Koosman, Darrell Jackson, Roger Erickson and Pete Redfern is also questionable at best. Lunch $1.00 0 Ks TEXA TEXAS-Every season, the Rangers appear to have enough talent to challenge for division honors, and every year they finish far out of first. The strong points of Texas are the bats of Mickey Rivers (.333), Buddy Bell (.329), Al Oliver (.319) and Jim Sundberg (.273). However, it seems unlikely that they can compensate for the team's pitching staff, which had a team ERA of 4.02. Jim Kern was the team's top reliever in 1979, but had a horrendous year last season. If he returns to his old form, he and Danny Darwin (13-4, 2.62) could make up an impressive tandem. The only positive thing about this statistic is that it was better than where the team finished in hitting-last. The only top-notch hitter the Mariners have is Bruce Bochte (.300). Jeff Burroughs and Richie Zisk were added in the off season, but this won't change the fact that Maury Wills initial year as the Mariners' manager will be a fruitless one.
