SPORTS__ Thursday, April 2, 1981 Thp Michigan Daily Page 9 'M' takes two from Eastern By MARTHA CRALL Special to the Daily YPSILANTI-If the Michigan aseball team expected an easy oubleheader like it had in its opener against Grand Valley, it was surprised. The: Wolverines found a worthy op- ponent in the Eastern Michigan Hurons. At a very windy, chilly Briggs Field yesterday, Michigan scrapped its way to a-sweep, winning the first game, 5-3, and stealing away the nightcap, 8-7. The wins raised the Wolverines' record to 10-7, while the Hurons fell to 10-19 for the season. THE WOLVERINES had to come fraim behind twice; in the opener, they Wlolverines rally for 5-3, 8-7 victories scored on a Bryon Horn single. MICHIGAN HAD taken a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run triple by catcher John Young. It cut the Hurons' lead to 6-4 in the fifth on singles by Greg Schulte, Dave Stober, and Jim Paciorek, followed by a single by Gerry Hool that drove in the pair. After Eastern got one back in the bot- tom of the fifth, Michigan scored three more in the top of the sixth. With two outs, the bases were loaded with Wolverines when Paciorek drilled an 0- 2 pitch down the left field line for a bases-clearing double that knotted the score at seven. Michigan's Tim Miller led off the seventh inning with a single, took second on an error by first-baseman Zureich, took third on a throwing error by catcher Doug Davis, and scored on Jeff Jacobson's sacrifice fly. WHILE THE Wolverines won the game, they lost the services of Young for a week or two, according to Mid- ' daugh. Young badly sprained his ankle when Baker attempted a steal of home in the bottom of the fifth, and after it was evident he wouldn't make it, bowled over the catcher. Freshman Bill Shuta, who relieved Jim Bartlett in the fifth inning, picked up the win to raise his record to 2-1. The hard-throwing right-hander went two and one-third innings, giving up no runs and one hit while walking none and striking out one. Brad Edick (2-2) took the loss despite giving up one unearned run. He pitched the seventh inning, gave up one hit and walked one man. . JIM PACIOREK was the hitting hero of the opener, going four-for-four (one double, three singles) and increasing his batting average to .463. "He kept us going in the first game," said Mid- daugh. "And he certainly didn't hurt us in the second one, either." Michigan got off to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on Paciorek's double and Hool's RBI single. Eastern went ahead, 2-1, in its half of the stanza, however, after put- ting together four singles off of starter Rich Stoll. The Wolverines chalked up one in the fourth to tie the score when Miller was safe on an infield single, stole second, and rode home on Randy Wroten's double. in the last inning when Hool was safe on a fielders' choice after Paciorek had singled. Miller tripled into the left field gap to score Hool, and Chris Sabo doubled Miller in. Freshman hurler Gary Wayne (2-1) picked up the win in relief after going one and one-third innings of scoreless, hitless baseball. Freshman starter Stoll pitched the first five and two-thirds, giving up three runs on nine hits, walking none and striking out one. Jay Davisson (2-2) took the loss for the Hurons, going six and one-third innings, allowing ten hits.,and five runs (four earned), walking two and striking out two. "All the freshmen, Stoll, Wayne, Bar- tlett and Shuta, threw well today," said Middaugh. "With the conditions like they were, I think the pitchers did a great job." The Wolverines will be on the road for their next six games, beginning in Ox- ford, Ohio with doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday against Miami University and a doubleheader with Cincinnati in Cincinnati on Sunday. They will return home for a single game next Tuesday against Aquinas. LSAT GR E GM rAT Test Preparation How do you prepare for these important tests? In the nightcap, they fell behind, 6-2, but they chipped away at the Hurons' lead, tied the game in the sixth, and went ahead for good in the seventh. I'm glad to see my club come from behind," said a pleased head coach Bud iddaugh. "And they had to do it twice ay." Michigan looked like it had blown the second game after a five-run Huron outburst in the fourth inning. Eastern sent eight men to the plate; six of them got hits off sophomore starter Scott Dawson. Gene Bezeau lead off with a single, Gary Baker followed with another single, and with one out, Dave Jonske lined a double into the gap in right center field, scoring both runners. Pat Zureich then bounced a triple off of h right field wall to drive in Jonske. After Zureich scored on a wild pitch, Doug Davis walked, stole second, and Paciorek - 6 hits, 3 RBI's THE HURONS went back ahead, 3-2, in their half of the fourth and things stayed that way until the sixth inning, when Michigan scored again. Jacobson was safe on shortstop Howard Sim- mons' error to lead off the inning, Wroten singled him to third, and Schulte lofted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Jacobson.
