The tumblers' overall team score in the tournament, 138.20, is their highest score to date, improving upon the previous all-time high of 135.35 set earlier this month against Illinois State. "THIS IS THE best finish in Michigan womens' gymnastics history," said Wolverine head coach Sheri Hyatt. "We, went into competition ranked sixth and hoping just to hold that position. Not only did we take fourth place, beating out a top ranked team, but we scored higher than I had ever hoped for . I just couldn't be happier with the'team's per- formance." Ohio State took first place in the tour- nament with 142.55. Michigan State and Illinois Chicago-Circle took second and. third, respectively, scoring 141.55 and 139.40. The Wolverines, who have been plagued by falls and imperfect routines all season, hit on almost all of their routines. For the first time this year, every team member scored in the 8.0 and above range.' JUNIOR TEAM CAPTAIN Teresa Bertoncin, in the final performance of her gymnastics career, made a good, solid showing on both the uneven bars and the floor exercise, according to Hyatt. "Teresa was practically robbed from qualifying for finals," she said. "She was beaten out on the bars by only five one-hundreths of a point." .Junior Cindy Shearon qualified for yesterday's individual finals in the vault with a 9.05 score. But' it was Beckwith who stole the show. Beckwith finished third in the team's meet's all-around competition Friday, tallying 36.00, behind Ohio State's Don- na Silber and Chicago Circle's Lori Zabel. She qualified for yesterday's in- dividual finals in the vault, uneven bars and balance beam events. With a score of 8.75 on the floor, she missed qualifying for that event by one tenth of a point.. IN THE FIRST individual event, Shearon took fifth place with a layout double twist. Beckwith captured first place for the Wolverines in an identical vault with a mark of 9.15. Beckwith then followed with a nearly- flawless 9.15 performance on the uneven bars, eliciting an excited hug from the normally placid Hyatt and a second place tie with Spartan Barb Zakowski. Buckeye Sandy Maisenbach took first place. Beckwith went on to capture another second place in the balance beam event with a 9.20. Chicago Circle's Zabel took. first with a 9.35. "I AM SO HAPPY with my score I don't know quite what to say," said Beckwith after her victory in the vault. "I've been practicing for so long, and I just hit it right." For her efforts, Beckwith was awarded a place on the meet's All- Midwest Regional Team - an honor bestowed upon the meet's top two finishers in each event and the com- petition's top four all-arounders. She also captured third in the all-around in- dividual competition behind Silber and Zabel, respectively. "We won't know till next week, but it looks as though Kathy has a good shot at making nationals," said Hyatt. "Right now she ranks second in the state, with 24 open spots. If she goes, it will be a Michigan women's gymnastics first - we've to date never had anyone qualify." + BeCkuitli . .. eyeing nationals 'M' netters slip past Miami of Ohio, 5-4 ' ; ',; I The Michigan women's tennis team barely squeaked past its visitors from Miami of Ohio for a 5-4 home court vic- tory yesterday at the Liberty Tennis Club. Relying heavily on their top-seeded players, the netters split the singles matches, winning three of six, and took two of the three doubles contests from the women of Miami. NUMBER ONE SINGLES player Marian Kremer defeated Miami's Anna Vanwelleghem, 6-1, 7-5. She then com- bined with partner Mary Mactaggert for a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Van- welleghem and partner Wendy Sweney in the first doubles contest. Mactaggert was a two-time winner as well, as she handily defeated Sweney, 6- 2, 6-2, in the second singles spot. But it was the Wolverines' depth that proved to be Miami's undoing. After their victories .in the top two spots, Michigan did not net another win until the number six singles contest. Juliet Naft banged her way to a 6-2, 6-3 drub- bing of Miami's Sarah Barnes. NAFT THEN WENT on to be the Blue's third double-winner, teaming with Robbie Risdon to take the second doubles match and clinch the win for Michigan, 6-1, 7-6, over Pam Bodman and Lauren Montgomery. . For Risdon, it was sweet revenge. Earlier Montgomery had rudely defeated her, 6-4, 6-1, in the fifth singles match. However, Risdon's loss was the lone lopsided one of the Wolverines' singles defeats. The third singles match went three sets, as Michigan's Sue Weber Sunmer Jobs We've completely rvised Martha's Vineyard's only summer employment guide.,fNames, phone numbers, maps, how to find places to live and much more. In the third doubles contest, Weber and Maryanne Hodges were trounced, 6-1, 6-2, by Howard and partner Nancy Hoff. The win was the third in five tour- nament games for the Wolverines, as they overcame Bowling Green and Glassboro State in addition to Florida International. The crowd of 3,640 pushed Miami's attendance record to over 101,000. Freshman hurler Gary Wayne took the loss, giving up four runs. Catcher Gerry Hool collected two singles in the losing effort, which made the Wolverines' final record 6-7 for the spring trip. a .4 .a 6 I. r h~ h..
