The Wolverines trailed throughout the entire second half, but fought back from a six-point deficit to tie the contest on a Mike McGee junper with about two minutes remaining. Seconds later, Mark Bodnar grabbed a loose ball rebound and Michigan ran down the clock for a last shot, but McGee's shot at the buzzer was no good, thus forcing the first overtime. The two teams exchanged buckets to open the extra stanza before Tim Mc- Cormick hit a pair of free throws to give the Wolverines a 61-59 lead with just under a minute left in the first over- time. They got the ball back on a missed shot by John Wiley, but Johnny Johnson missed a layup and Tim Mc- Cormick traveled after grabbing the rebound. Minnesota took the ball downcourt with 21 seconds left, facing a tight man- to-man Wolverine defense and plotting for a last-second shot. The plan worked to perfection-Darryl Mitchell swished a 15-foot shot from the corner with just one second showing on the clock to send the game into a second overtime. MINNESOTA (9-2) looked like it would turn the tables on the Wolverines and decide the verdict when the Gophers took the lead early in the second overtime, 63-61, on a Breuer shot off a rebound. The Gophers resumed possession on a turnover and worked the clock, but McGee reboun- ded a missed Gopher shot and was fouled by Mitchell at the other end of the court. McGee converted on the lat- ter of two free throws to pull Michigan within one, 63-62. Buckets were once again exchanged and the Wolverines were ahead, 66-65, with 16 seconds left, when McCormick missed the front end of a one-and-one situation. Mitchell was fouled by McGee at the other end and converted both charity tosses, setting up the Wolverines for Marty Bodnar's dramatic final shot: Both teams looked tense in the early going and, like the temperature out- side, were very cold from the floor in the first part of the half. Due to some tenacious Michigan man-to-man defense inside, and in- timidation from Minnesota's Randy Breuer, (who blocked three Paul Heuerman shots early in the game) the score was only 14-12 for Michigan, midway through the first half. UNLIKE THE SHOOTING, the ac- tion of the game itself was quite hot. Michigan took the lead 20 seconds into the game on a McGee jumper, and didn't trail until six minutes later when Coleman hit an inside shot for both his and Minnesota's seventh and eighth points of the game to put the Gophers up by two. Michigan came right back, taking advantage of fast breaks and running off a 10-4 spurt on its hosts, as the Wolverines took what was the biggest lead of the game up to that point, 18-12. McGee stole the ball and raced the length of the floor for an uncontested layup to give them a six-point margin. Minnesota head coach Jim Dutcher then called a time out, and his Gophers proceeded to net two unanswered buckets, which put the capacity par- tisan crowd into an ear-shattering fren- zy. The crowd was quieted momen- tarily minutes later by a McCormick short jumper to put Michigan up, 20-17. THE GOPHERS WENT back to the attack, and after the lead see-sawed for a few minutes, the two teams went into the lockerroom with Minnesota up by a narrow 29-28 margin. Despite Minnesota's great height ad- vantage, the Gophers out-rebounded Michigan by only two and both McGee (13 points), McCormick (9) and Garner (6) were able to score inside.
