SPORTS Page 8 Thursday, March 12, 1981 'M' FACES DUQUESNE IN NIT OPENER Wolverines set to 'Duke'it out The Michigan Daily Michigan 27-game statistics 0 By BUDDY MOOREHOUSE In case you're one of the many Michigan basketball fans in the dark about tonight's NIT opponent, the Duquesne Dukes, then here's a quick primer; first of all, the name is pronounced "doo-kane." Second, the Dukes hail from Pittsburgh and play in the Eastern Eight conference. And third, they are a very good basketball team. "YEP, THEY'RE good," assessed Wolverine coach Bill Frieder. "They're the champs of their conference and they're a very physical team." Before the season, Duquesne was picked to finish near the bottom of the heap in the Eastern Eight, a league ISRAEL LOWE$T CO$T FLIGHTS Reliable - Flexible 0 Free European Stops Buy Now For Summer And $ave (212) 689-8980 Outside New York FREEC1-800-223-7676 The Ceter For Student Travel 1140 Broadway N.YC, NY. 10001 "Or 8ft Year" which also includes schools such as Pit- tsburgh, Rutgers and St. Bonaventure. But third-year head coach Mike Rice's squad surprised everyone by finishing the regular season at 20-9. The Dukes also compiled a 12-4 league record, which tied them for first place in the Eastern Eight with Rhode Island. Duquesne lost to Pittsburgh in the con- ference tournament, however, so the Panthers received the bid to the NCAA tournament while the Dukes settled for an invitation to the NIT for the second straight year. . "It's sort of a letdown for us not making it into the NCAA," said the amiable Rice. "But when you stop to think that there are 200 schools just sit- ting at home now, then it's not so bad. It might be more of a letdown if we were playing someone other than Michigan. There's so much prestige in playing a Big Ten school." LEADING THE WAY for the Dukes this year has been 6-7 forward Bruce Atkins. Atkins led the Eastern Eight in rebounding with an 11.8 average, and has been in the Top Ten nationally all year in that category. The junior from Wilkinsburg, Pa. has also proved to be a proficient scorer this season, averaging 14.2 points per game on 59 peicent shooting from the field. Duquesne's leading scorer is 6-4 guard Ronnie Dixon, currently averaging 17.0 ppg. Dixon was named to the Associated Press' All-American honorable mention squad. His running mate in the backcourt is 6-2 freshman Andy Sisinni, a defensive specialist. Sisinni also holds the distinction of being the Dukes', best free throw shooter with a 78 percent mark.' For one of the few times all season, Michigan's Thad Garner won't have to look up to the player that he will tip-off against. Duquesne starts 6-7 John Moore in the pivot. Moore is also scoring in double figures, currently averaging 13.5 ppg. THE OTHER FORWARD spot is filled by 6-4 Rod Scott. A cousin of for- mer Miami Dolphins running back Mercury Morris, Scott is a high-* percentage shooter known primarily for his defensive play. Although Michigan and Duquesne have never met on the basketball court before, they did have two common foes in Detroit and Dayton. Detroit succum- bed to the Wolverines at Joe Louis Arena, 85-68, while Duquesne beat the Titans 72-70 in Pittsburgh. But while Michigan beat Dayton 85-84, the Dukes suffered a triple-overtime loss to the Flyers, 109-100. According to Michigan's Sports In- formation Department, if the Wolverines win tonight they will host the winner of tonight's Toledo- American game on Sunday. Toledo (20- 9) tied for first place in the Mid- American Conference. At 24-5,. American has the best record of any team in the NIT field. PLAYER McGee ........................
