QUALIFIES FOR NCAA's Ball State rips N. Illinois, 79-66 By TOM SHAHEEN Ray McCallum's 24 points, combined 'th George Bradley's 10-rebound per- rmance, boosted Ball State to a 79-66 rout over Northern Illinois in the finals of the Mid-American Conference tour- nament at Crisler Arena before a crowd of 6,212 last night. More importantly, the Cardinals gained an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament as the MAC's represen- tative. "We just lost to a much better team," idlosing Northern Illinois coach John cDougal. "They were better in all facets of the game, and are deserving of the championship." McCALLUM, WHO scored 38 points in the weekend's two games at Crisler Arena, was chosen the tournament's most outstanding player and was selec- ted to the all-tournament team. Also named to the team were: Al Gooden of Ball State; Allen Rayhorn, from Northern Illinois; Toledo's Har- vey Knuckles; and Melvin Maxwell, Western Michigan's leading scorer. Northern Illinois, which trailed 39-33 at halftime, scored six unanswered points at the start of the second half to tie the game at 39-39. It looked as if the Huskies would make a game of it, as they stayed close for the next 10 minutes. BUT McCALLUM notched six straight points after the score had been tied at 49-49, and the Cardinals didn't relinquish the lead after that, capitalizing on numerous turnovers and air balls by the flustered Northern Illinois squad. "I thought the turning point was in the second half when we were up two points," said Ball State coach Steve Yoder. "We switched to a man-to-man defense and created a couple of tur- novers - those things were key for us." The two teams have met three times this season, and each time the Car- dinals came out on top. Ball State defeated Ohio University, 85-80, and Toledo, 79-77, en route to the final game of the tourney. Northern Illinois disposed of Bowling Green, 79-72, and eked out a win against Western Michigan, 75-73, before being trounced by the Cardinals. The Huskies finished the season with a 17-12 record, while the champions' record stands at 20-9. "We're going there (to the NCAA tournament) to win," said McCallum. When asked what the Cardinals would have to do to win in the post- season tourney, Bradley replied, "just keep on doing what we've been doing - we've got the winning formula, so we'll keep using it." SOPHOMORE FORWARD Mitch Adamek scored 23 points to lead the Toledo Rockets to a 71-65 victory over Western Michigan in the battle for third place in the MAC. The victory, which improved Toledo's season record to 20- 9, kept the Rockets' hopes for a post- tournament bid alive. While the NIT is probably a more realistic aspiration for Toledo, coach Bob Nichols believes that his team has proven itself worthy of NCAA con- sideration. "We'd like to go to the NCAA's," he said. "Our conference has ten teams. Some conferences - I won't mention their names - with only seven teams sent two teams apiece last year to the NCAA'a. I think the MAC has been overlooked in recent years by the committee. Our conference is just as strong as those others." Western Michigan, which finished its season at 15-13, played without the services of Walker D. Russell (16 ppg, 5.5 assists). They were paced by Max- well's 17 points and Jasper McElroy added 16 in the losing cause.
