Senior forward Mark Gannon of Iowa fouled Bostic with the score tied 70-70. Bostic missed the first of his two free throws but made the second to provide the margin of victory. IOWA CALLED timeout with 18 seconds to play but was unable to get off a clean shot. Senior forward Vince Brooking of the Hawkeyes tied the game, 60-60, with 5:40 to play and neither team scored again uptil the overtime. 9 MSU's Kevin Smith led all scorers with 25 points while senior center Jay Vincent scored 24 points. Indiana 69, Illinois 66 CHAMPAIGN (AP)-Isiah Thomas and Ray Tolbert each scored 14 points and Steve Risley added 10 in the second half to lift No. 14 Indiana to a 69-66 triumph last night over No. 16 Illinois and into a tie for the Big Ten lead. The Illini held a 56-55 edge with 7:10 remaining, but Indiana put together an 8-2 scoring stretch to post a 63-58 lead with 3:01 remaining and never trailed. Indiana never led by more than five, but the Illini failed to get closer than three over the closing minutes. WITH CRAIG TUCKER getting eight of his 14 points in the first half, Illinois took a 32-28 lead into the locker room at halftime. But the Hoosiers roared out for the first eight points of the second half to grab a 36-32 margin with 18:06 left, and the Illini responded with five straight points to re-take the lead at 37-36. Ohio State 93, Purdue 92 COLUMBUS, (AP)-A 10-foot jump shot from substitute guard Ed Major with five seconds left in the third overtime sparked Ohio State to a 93-92 Big Ten Conference victory over Purdue on Thursday night. The victory snaps a five-game losing streak for the Buckeyes, now 8-9 in the league and 13-13 overall. Major, who had scored only one point during the entire season, came off the bench to score eight points, including the winning shot. (AP) - Freshman Al McKinney drilled seven straight free throws in the final 21/2 minutes as Vanderbilt upset seventh- *anked Kentucky, 60-55, last night in the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Con- ference basketball tournament. Vanderbilt took the lead for good on a pair of free throws by Willie Jones. Vanderbilt, 15-13, was led in scoring by Al Miller with 17 points. Sam Bowie and Charles Hurt had 12 apiece for the Wildcats. North Carolina 69, N.C. St. 54 * LANDOVER, Md. (AP)-Freshman center Sam Perkins ignited an nine- point run midway in the second half Thursday night that carried the 12th- ranked North Carolina Tar Heels to a 6954 victory over North Carolina State in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference basketball tournament. With North Carolina leading by seven points, Perkins scored seven con- ecutive points for the Tar Heels and 4urd Mike Pepper capped the spurt with a layup that gave North Carolina a 58-42 lead and a 16-point advantage, its biggest of the evening. Perkins wound up with 22 points to lead the Tar Heels, and Al Wood scored 13:Art Jones led the Wolfpack with 14. North Carolina, which finished second during the ACC's regular season, improved its record to 23-7 while N.C. State, seventh in the ACC, dropped to 14-13. Tie for Ivy PHILADELPHIA (AP)-A one-game Ivty League playoff match will be held Tuesday if the University of Pen- nsylvania and Princeton finish in a tie for the league's college basketball crown. The winner of the 8 p.m. game would receive the Ivy League berth in the NCAA tournament. Both teams were 11-1 in league play, losing to each other during the season. Both will close out the season this weekend, each playing home games against Columbia and Cornell. Virginia 76, Georgia Tech 47 LANDOVER, (AP)-Ralph Sam- pson, Virginia's 7-foot-4 center, scored 20 points and, despite drawing two technical fouls, led the fourth-ranked Cavaliers to a 76-47 romp over Georgia Tech yesterday in the opening round of the Atlantic Coast Conference basket- ball tournament. Virginia took command midway through the first half by scoring 12 con secutive points and taking a 21-8 lead with 6:29 left before intermission. The Cavaliers stretched that lead to as many as 34 points, 74-40, on a free throw by Terry Gates with 1:50 to play. Virginia led 34-14 at the half, holding Georgia Tech to five field goals in the first 20 minutes, and the Cavaliers used their entire bench in the second half.
