Tonight it will see something else it has not seen in two weeks-the Denver Pioneers. The last time the two teams met was in Ann Arbor when the Wolverines swept the then first place Pioneers, 9-4 and 7-5. BOTH TEAMS thought at that time that they wouldn't see each other again, but as fate would have it, Denver finished fourth in the WCHA (23-13-2 overall, 15-11-2 in the WCHA) and Michigan fifth (21-15 overall, 15-13 WCHA) to bring the Wolverines to Den- ver for another two game series, this time for the first round of play-offs. The team that scores the most total goals advances to the second round. Both teams were swept at home last weekend. Denver was hit by the red hot WCHA champions, the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 3-0, 4-3. The Wolverines suffered double set backs to Michigan Tech, 5-4 and 5-2, putting the Richmond and Blum to lead Michigan attack U .pun Amateur and C One FrE Color Eh UP TO When you pe third is free. Despite the Michigan domination of the earlier meetings, both coaches ex- pect this weekend to be a new ball game. MICHIGAN HEAD coach John Gior- dano calls it "the battle of the Bat- tered." The Wolverines have several nagging injureis, but nobody has been taken out of the lineup. Denver will play without the services of sophomore winger Marty Steinley, who was injured in the Minnesota series. Also hobbled was junior center Andy Hill, but he is expected to play. The Pioneers are paced by sophomore winger Ken Berry (20 goals, 34 assists, 54 points). Berry, however, has been in a slump of late, scoring only one point in his last seven games here. Denver will have to rely on its offensive and defensive strengths on the power play, which have ranked near the top of the league all season. MICHIGAN IS paced in scoring by two defensemen, junior. Steve Rich- mond and senior John Blum. The Wolverines will need a solid defensive performance to counter Denver's stingy defense. In other first round action around the league, first place Minnesota hosts eighth place Minnesota-Duluth, second place Wisconsin hosts seventh place Colorado College, and third place Michigan Tech hosts seventh place North Dakota. Coach Bill Farley's team seems to be in high gear, coming off consecutive conference victories over Ohio State, 66-47, and Michigan State, 75-38. Bolstered by the addition of All- American diver Kevin Machemer, the Wolverines have high hopes of im- proving on their past performances. MICHIGAN'S overall record of 7-3, 4- 2 in the Big Ten, might seem to indicate a successful campaign, but that is not the case. Inconsistency has plagued the tankers throughout the season. Along with lopsided defeats of conference foes Purdue and Illinois by identical scores of 93-20 have been losses to Wisconsin, 67-46, and Indiana, 60-53. In order to have a strong showing, Michigan will rely heavily on defending Big Ten 200-yard breastroke champion Tom Ernsting and Ron Merriott, last SPORTS OF THE DAILY: Tankers take aim at B' Ten title CKARD MAPLE UNIVERSITY 973-0770 663-6529 994-0433 year's one meter diving titlist. Freestyler Bob Murray, who has the fastest time in the conference this season in the 50-yard freestyle, long distance specialist Kevin Williams, and backstroker Bruce Gemmell will also be chief catalysts in the tankers' at- tempt to end Indiana's string of 20 con- secutive Big Ten swimming champion- ships. Netters fall Special to the Daily In the first dual meet of the season the men's tennis team suffered a defeat against the University of Texas in Cor- pus Christi, 7-2. With only two outdoor practices, the team, although ranked tenth in the nation, was overtaken by 17th-ranked Texas. "The teams were evenly paired, although we were not as sharp as we should be," said coach Brian Eisner. The two Michigan winners were Matt Horwitch, who beat Guillermo Stevens, 7-6, 6-3, and Mike Leach defeating Paul Cruzier 7-6, 6-4. In doubles action however, Horwitch Ll A and Leach lost, as did the Wolverines' two remaining doubles teams. Texas was a strong team, and the Wolverines will have their work cut out for them again today as they meet Oklahoma State, the defending Big Eight champions.
