Ron Bardach said he sees the
elimination of the department as a set-
back "in the identity of Geography."
During his travels as a geographer,
he said he has repeatedly had to explain
to people who geographers are and
what they do. Bardach, who plans to
work for an oil company, said job op-
portunities are plentiful for geography
graduates.

Shirley Axon, who received a
master's degree in geography from the
University in 1977, said the geographic
theory and perspective she achieved
here has made her "far more effective"
in her profession. Axon cited numerous
committees on which she has served,
including an appointment by governor
Milliken to the Hazardous Waste Plan-
ning Committee.
PROF. FINE told students the review
process is not a formality. "We feel
free to make any decision we feel
proper," he said.
Brazer said the committee will be
recommending "whatever policy or
combinations of proposals we think
best. "

of it that way. There are very few dif-
ficult questions that can be answered
that simply."
IN ADDITION TO the possibility of
recommending the geography depar
tment be either entirely eliminated or
entirely maintained, Brazer said the
committee will examine the possibility
of a merger with another department,
paring down weak areas of the depar-
tment, and several other proposals.
The committee will also consult with
three distinguished academicians out-
side the University - a professor from
Princeton, which does not have a
geography department, and twp
physical geographers from departmen:
ts at the University of Minnesota and
Ohio State University.
Brazer noted the review committee
meets four days a week, five to six
hours a day. He said they are reading
data to prepare a recommendation for
the LSA Executive Committee. He
hopes the recommendation will be
ready by the end of the month, he ad-
ded.
