'PUCKIN' A!'
Surprising icers vie for top spot

over Windsor in an exhibition game. It
has also won five of its last six starts.
But while Michigan was stringing
victories together, Wisconsin was
swept by Rensselaer Polytechnic In-
stitute 6-4 and 6-5. It was the first time
since 1965 that an eastern team swept
the Badgers.
Despite those rough losses, Wisconsin
has a strong offense that has Michigan
coach John Giordano a bit worried.
"We're leery of Wisconsin. They have
great offensive skills."
The Badger offense is led by junior
right wing Ron Vincent. Vincent has 41
points, including 11 goals this season.
"Ronnie is both consistent and versatile
and an excellent scorer," said Wiscon-
sin coach Bob Johnson.
Other strong points on the Badger of-
fense are Scott Lecy and freshman
John Newberry. Lecy, a senior right
wing, scored more than 50 points in his
last two WCHA seasons. This year he
has 39 with 13 goals.
Newberry, a forward from British
Columbia, has 28 points thus far this
season.
The Wisconsin defense is strong as
well. One of its main strengths is All-
A merican defenseman Theran Welsh,
who has 25 points this season.
The last time these two teams met,
they split the series. Wisconsin won the

first game by the score of 5-3 but tp
Wolverines rebounded and won t
second, 3-1.
This time coach Giordano is hopeful
of winning two. He feels the team i$

Michigan did take second in the Great
Lakes Invitational Tournament held
over the holidays and had three players
named to the all-tournament squad. But
to stay close in the tougher competition
of the WCHA, Michigan needs the vic-
tories over Wisconsin.

Slowing down is more than
just a safer way to drive. It's also
a great way to save gas and
money. You'll get about 20 more
miles from every tank of gas if
you slow down from 70.to 55 mph
on the highway. And that's just
one of the easy ways you can save
gasoline.
Radial tires save you about
3C on every gallon. Keeping your
tires properly inflated saves

another 2C a gallon. And a well-
tuned car can save you about 4C a
gallon more.
Saving energy is easier than
you think, and with the rising
energy costs we're facing today,
it's never been more important.
