THE RECRUITING WAR-Bill Frieder is waging a two-fisted battle these days: trying to keep his Wolverines near the top of the Big Ten and luring the area's top high school prospects to Ann Arbor. The Michigan coach scored big on the latter front yesterday when Greg Washington, the enormously talented athlete from Detroit Western, signed a letter of in- tent to attend Michigan. Washington, a 6-3, 218-pound forward who averages 18points and 17 rebounds per game, will divide his time between UNISEX Long or Short Haircuts by Professionals at ... He is an all-state defensive back who was recently described in a national publication as the country's best high school athlete. Washington's football activities will force him to miss the basketball team's early non-conference games, but Frieder said he would be able to par- ticipate in all Big Ten games. "It was a mutual agreement that he could play both sports," the coach said after Washington confirmed his desire to attend Michigan. "Playing football and basketball is tough, but if there's one kid who can do it, Greg Washington can, because he's such a great athlete." Washington joins Flint Central point guard Eric Turner on the list of players committed to Michigan. Within the next three to six weeks, most of the premier prep players will be signing letters of intent, and it has been learned that a large number are considering Michigan. The following is a partial list of highly-regarded players who have paid at least one visit to Ann Arbor and in whom Frieder is very interested (in alphabetical order): " Mike Ballenger, 6-3 guard, Jasper, Ind. Noted for fine outside shooting. Also a skilled passer. " Andre Goode, 6-8 forward-center, Rockford, Il. A prototype power for- ward-strong and sturdy. * Nelson Johnson, 6-9 forward, Golden Valley Lutheran College, Min- neapolis. Extremely capable inside performer. Has been a junior college standout for the past two seasons. Also being wooed by Minnesota coach Jim Dutcher. " Leslie Rockymore, 6-3% guard, Detroit Southwestern. Regarded to be a good scorer and excellent all-around athlete. " Brad Sellers, 6-10 forward-center, Cleveland. Smooth player, gifted offen- sive performer. Rail-thin; is best suited for forward spot. *Greg Stokes, 6-9 forward, Hamilton, Ohio. Great all-around player who is an especially versatile offensive talent. " Greg Wendt, 6-6 swingman, Detroit Catholic Central. A lefthanded shooter, deadly from long range. A hustler' on defense. Voise Winters, 6-7 forward, Chicago. A pure shooter and scorer, averages 40 points per game. Also con- sidering DePaul and Illinois. IT WON'T BE EASY-Tonight's game at Illinois marks the first leg in a six-game stretch run for the Wolverines. The Fighting Illini lost ,to Michigan, 80-76, in double overtime, but in recent outings have been playing ex- cellent basketball, as evidenced by their win Saturday over Ohio State. The Illini are a team deep in talent, both in the backcourt and the front line. Newcomer guards Derek Harper and Craig Tucker are among the quickest in the Big Ten, and the forward tandem of Eddie Johnson and Mark Smith is perhaps the best anywhere. After tonight's contest, the Maize and Blue have a reprieve, as last-place Nor- thwestern'comes to town. But from that point, the sehedule becomes mur- derous: road games against co-leaders Indiana and Iowa and home contests against Purdue and Minnesota. r- Cagers' Corner Cagers face tough Illi.1 MICHIGAN (7-5, 16-5) 40-Mike McGee, 6-5 Sr. (24.2) 45-Thad Garner, 6-7 Jr. (9.8) 15-Paul Heuerman, 6-8 Sr. (7.6) 34-John Johnson, 6-4 Sr. (15.2) 24-Marty Bodnar, 6-3 Sr. (7.4) F F C G G ILLINOIS (8-4, 16-5) 42-Mark Smith, 6-8 Sr. (13.8) 33-Eddie Johnson, 6-8 Sr. (17.0) 44-Derek Holcomb, 6-11 Sr. (6.2) 22-Perry Range, 6-4 Jr. (8.4) 12-Derek Harper, 6-4 Fr. The Fighting Illini of Illinois, sporting an 8-4 conference record (16-5 overall), good for second place behind Indiana and Iowa, host the Blue in Champaign. The same Buckeye squad which embarrassed the Wolverines a week ago, 105-87. THE ILLINI, IN fact, hrave won two in a row and five of their'last six con- tests. Michigan, on the other hand, has fallen two games behind the leaders at 7-5 (16-5 overall) with its two defeats. Needless to say, Wolverine coach Bill Frieder views tonight's game, along with upcoming trips to Iowa and In- diana, as crucial to his team's chances of making the NCAA tournament. "It would have really helped us if we could have won today," Frieder remarked after the MSU game. "Now we'll have to pick up one of those road games that we ordinarily wouldn't have gotten." Illinois suffered a double-overtime defeat at the hands of the Wolverines, 80-76, on January 22. In that contest, Lou Henson's squad made a valiant ef- fort to win, rallying back in the last few minutes of the game to force the extra sessions. The Illini continue to be led by their Illinois' guard tandem is one of the quickest, in the conferenice. Craig Tucker, a 6-1 junior college transfer from Flint, has been playing very well of late, averaging 11.8.ppg. Freshman Derek Harper (6-4) is averaging 9.3 ppg and is also close to setting the school's single-season assist record. The center for the' Illini, 6-11 senior Derek Holcomb, was named the Big Ten's player of the week for his outstanding play in his team's last two road wins at Wisconsin and Ohio State. In the Columbus contest, Holcomb held the Buckeye's Herb Williams to just seven points. So with such a tall order tonight, Michigan's only consolation might be that the last-place Northwestern Wild- cats will be in town Saturday. -game statistics outstanding forward combination, Ed- die Johnson and Mark Smith. The two seniors are currently one-and-two in the all-time career scoring list at Illinois, Johnson with 1,550 career points and Smith with 1,541.
