91 The Michigan Daily Tuesday, February 17, 1981 Page 8 Matmen scare Cyclones No. 1 Iowa St. downs 'M', 20-15 By JOHN KERR Even one of its best performances of the season couldn't stop the Michigan wrestling team from going down to defeat last night at Crisler Arena. The top ranked Iowa State Cyclones, all decked out in their imposing bright reed and yellow 'warm-up suits, upen- ded the inspired Wolverines, 20-15 in a match that was up for grabs until Iowa State's John Forshee and Michigan's Pat McKay battled to a 5-5 draw in the 190-pound match. The draw gave the Cyclones an insurmountable 20-11 lead in the team score. IOWA STATES~ coach Dr. Harold Nichols, a former Michigan wrestler who won the national championship at 145 pounds in 1939, explained that the Cyclones did not bring a full contingent of wrestlers to Ann Arbor. "We left four boys home due to exams," said Nichols. "Our main hope was that we wouldn't get beat, but Michigan wrestled real well." To the delight of the partisan crowd, the Wolverines jumped out to a quick 9- 0 lead in the team score by winning the first three matches of the evening. After a ; scoreless first period, Michigan's 118-pounder Joe McFarland jumped to a 4-0 second period lead over the Cyclones' Kevin Darkus. Darkus rode McFarland for all but the final 11 seconds of the second period, but thanks to two penalty points and a reversal by McFarland, couldn't muster a point. However, in the final stanza, Darkus escaped to narrow the gap to 4-1. McFarland then put the mat- ch away by taking Darkus down with 40 seconds remaining in the match to seal a 6-2 victory. WITH THE crowd roaring, the Wolverines 126-pounder, Jim Mathias, upended John Thorn, 14-9. Mathias was able to take down Thorn at will, registering eight of his 14 points on take-downs, but that didn't stop Thorn from keeping the match exciting. After taking a 4-3 lead into the second period, Thorn put Mathias on his back, but Mathias squirmed loose and Thorn, in- stead of earning a fall, garnered only two points forta near-fall. Mathias then turned the tables on the Cyclone wrestler by registering an escape, a take down and a near-fall of his own. Then, in the third period with the score tied at 9-9, Mathias . escaped from Thorn, took him down and put him on his back to clinch.the victory. Michigan coach Dale Bahr explained that these two victories were especially sweet for the Wolverines. "We recruited both Darkus and Thorn but coach Nichols 'stole' them from us,' Bahr said, "so-it felt good that we beat them." WITH THE TEAM score now 6-0 in Michigan's favor, Bill Goodill notched the Wolverines third straight individual victory with a 7-5 decision over Iowa State's 134-pounder, Adley Parker. Goodill seemed to have the match in hand midway through the final period as he put Parker on his back to earn a near-fall and a 6-1 lead. But Parker picked up a reversal with 25 seconds left in the match and with time running out Goodill found himself staring at the lights on the ceiling of Crisler Arena. Fortunately for the Michigan wrestler, the match ended before Parker could do any more damage and Goodill had hung on for a narrow decision. Iowa State's Gene Hartley finally put the Cyclones on the board with a fairly easy 8-3 decision over Michigan's Mark Pearson in the 142-pound match. Bahr explained that he was somewhat sur- prised at the outcome of the match. "I FELT that out of the first four weight classes our best shot was at 142," he said, "but we didn't do it. I'm happy though with our first three kids. They set the tempo of the meet." The next four matches went in Iowa State's favor as Nate Carr, Jim Farina, Murray Crews, and Dave Allen all decisioned their Wolverines opponents. Farina, wrestling at 158 pounds, edged Nemir Nadhir in a match that could have thrown the meet to the Wolverines. Nadhir escaped from Farina with 58 seconds remaining in the match to even the score at 4-4, but with 12 seconds to go Farina took him down to lock up a 7-4 victory.
