By MARTHA CRALL Special to the Daily DULUTH - Jeff Tessier scored into an empty net on a broken-down play at 10:17 in the third period on an assist from Dave Richter. That was the only play that mattered, as it broke a 5-5 tie and lifted the Michigan Wolverines past the Univer- sity of Minnesota-Duluth, 6-5, last night before 4,552 at Duluth Arena. THE, VICTORY GAVE the Wolverines a sweep of the series, a five- game winning streak, and a 13-11 WCHA record. UMD's record dropped to 9-15. Penalties - UMD-Erickson (holding) 6:00; UMD- Curvers (cross-checking) 7:29; UMD-DeGrio for Michigan and had a busy night, saving 26 shots, including two during a UMD power play in the last 35 seconds of the game. Gordie Hampson put the puck in at 6:00 in the final period, but goalie Ron Erickson was busy holdingDennis May, so the goal was revoked and a penalty was assessed. One minute and 29 seconds later, Tom Kurvers was whistled for cross-checking and the Wolverines has a five-on-three power play for 31 seconds. IT WAS LONG enough for Roger Bourne to capitalize, thanks to perfect passes from John Blum and Tim Man- ning at 7:52. Bourne's goal tied the score at five. Michigan didn't seem to lose any in- tensity from its 9-2 Friday night win as it came out with four first period goals. BRIAN LUNDBERG began the Wolverine scoring parade when, in a four-on-four situation, he took a slap- shot from the blue line that passed through the crowd in front of the net and goalie Ron Erickson at7:15. The next Michigan score came when Dennis May, who was in the crease, took a pass from Tim Manning, who was in the slot, and lifted the puck past Erickson. Roger Bourne also picked up an assist on the goal, which came at 12:27. At 13:36 the freshmen paired up to score the Wolverines' third goal. Kelly McCrimmon drew Erickson out with a shot, backhanded the rebound to Enzo Augimeri, who had an open net to welcome his shot. MICHIGAN UPPED the score to 4-0 and 14:51 when Manning, on an assist by Dave Richter and Joe Milburn, slap- ped in his own rebound. That's when UMD decided it wasn't going to be blanked in the opening session. At 16:45 Davey Johnson took a rebounded shot by Bill Oleksuk to the right of the net and lifted it over Var- vari. ONLY 32 SECONDS later, Gary DeGrio pulled an instant replay of the Bulldogs' first goal, except from the left side of the net. The goal was assisted by Johnson and Oleksuk and made the score 4-2 after one period. The momentum swung UMD's way in the second period as senior rightwinger, Al Cleveland scored two goals within' the 20 minutes to propel the Bulldogs iW- to a 5-4 lead. The clock had to be stopped time and time again as tempers flared and fights between the two teams broke out.. WITH UMD IN a power play situation for almost the entire period, all the ac- tion took place in the Wolverines' end: Both of Cleveland's goals were scored on power plays as was Scott Carlston's. UMD's Gary DeGrio put the puck in again with 42 seconds left, but it was ruled that he lifted his stick over his head to slap the puck in. 'M' RACES TO 66-47 WIN: Swimmers annihilate Ohio State. YOU BE THE JUDGE By CHUCK HARTWIG Nobody broke the 100 point'mark this - 26 time, but the Michigan men's swim team did manage to thoroughly dominate their Ohio State opponents, winning yesterday's meet at Matt Mann Pool by the score of 66-47. "We swam really well as a team," said Wolverine coach Bill Farley. "We had a lot of really good times today." This meet was an oddity because the diving portion was held on Friday night rather than Saturday during the meet. The reason for the change was that Michigan's diving coach, Dick Kimball, had to be at the AIAW diving qualifiers at Penn State on Saturday. As a result of the change, Michigan went into the swimming segment of the meet with a 14-4 lead, as the divers turned in yet another outstanding performance. Ron Merriott led the way once again taking first place in both the one- and three-meter diving events Friday with scores of 325.20 and 338.70 respectively. Ken Vigiletti also dove well in gaining third in the one-meter event, and second in the three-meter. In yesterday's swimming events, Michigan came out strong at the start and turned the meet into a runaway by winning the first four races. This vic- tory string was capped by a sweep of the top three spot in the 50-yard freestyle with Bob Murray taking first in a time of 21.37, followed by Tom Pederson and Trip Gage. Other winners for the Maize and Blue included Kevin Williamsonin the 100- Syardfreestyle, senior co-captain John Slykhouse in the 200-yard freestyle, and Tom Ernsting in the 200-yard breast- stroke. Bruce Gemmell, who Farley praised as having a fine meet, took first place in the 200-yard backstroke, and also finished a strong second in the 200-yard freestyle. Michigan's final winner was the 400-yard medley relay team of Paco Santana, Ernsting, Scott Crowder, and Mark Noetzel, which opened the meet with a win in a time of 3:32.72. Farley was very pleased with, his team following the meet. "This was not an easy meet for us," he said. "Ohio State is a good team. We won this meet easily because we swam extremely well." Farley also commented on the up- coming Big Ten Championships. "We're doing a lot of quality work (in practice). I think we're on a good schedule and it's going to show," he said. He also feels that there are several swimmers on the team who are improving significantly, and who will have good chances at placing well in the conference showdown in Milwaukee, March 5-7.
