But even McGee's outstanding effort wasn't enough to stop Ohio State. After the record breaking shot, which pulled Michigan to within four, the Buckeyes reeled off a decisive 14-4 spurt on the Wolverines to go up, 35-21, with seven minutes left in the half. The two teams basically traded baskets for the rest of the stanza (OSU leading, 50-35 at the half), but the damage had been done. "We just didn't do the job in a lot of respects to hang in with them." The Blue cagers were by no means ready to throw in the towel, however, as they went into a full court press im- mediately following the intermission. The press worked - at least for a while - as Johnny Johnson (16 points) and McGee capitalized on press-forced steals with three quick buckets each. That brough the Wolverines to within eight, 55-47, less than two-and-a-half minutes into the second stanza. Ohio State came back with three straight hoops of its own minutes later to go ahead by 14, however, and regained the momentum once again, and-as it turned out-for good. "We did a good job of coming back in the second half," said Frieder. "But just like the Iowa game, we had too far to go against a very talented team." Two more records -the Big Ten all- time scoring mark for all games and the one for conference play - are now within McGee's grasp. He needs 131 points to break Rick Mount's tota of 2,323., At present, however, McGee is con- cerned only with winning. "I come in way overweight, and the first couple of days I don't worry about it. The last couple of days, I cut like crazy," Rechsteiner said. He said that his methods for losing weight are abstaining from food and riding a bike inthe sauna. Sometimes the wrestlers go to ex tremes and have to drop a little more weight than they would like to. "In nationals last year, I lost eight-and-a- half pounds in two hours," Haughn said, "but I only stayed that way for 20 minutes." Rechsteiner said that his maximum weight loss for a day was eight pounds, and even 118-pound Joe McFarland says that the most he has lost in one day is six-and-a-half pounds - quite a lo for someone his size. Bahr stressed that too much of a weight loss isn't good for the wrestlers, and he discourages them from "boun- cing around" in differnt weight classes. "If they'd just eat a little," Bahr said, "they might not have a problem." Rechsteiner, who admitted that he is "the worst" weight-loser on the team, perhaps put the squad's weight-loss method into the proper perspective. "On the last day, we don't eat anythin ... and we pray." '1 SHIRT Ann Arbor's fastest! From 10-800 T-shirts screenprint- ed within 24 hours of order. Multi-color printing our specialty. McGeerthe senior forward who has been one of the most brilliant offensive performers in Big Ten history, last night became Michigan'sall-time leading scorer, surpassing the legen- dary Cazzie Russell's total of 2,164 midway through the first half. THE SHOT WHICH lifted McGee ahead of Russell came at 11:21 of the opening session. He broke loose in the right corner and unleashed a perfect 18- foot jumper to etch his name in Wolverine immortality. But McGee wasn't finished. Before the evening had ended, he was to score 37 points - one short of his career high, set in 1978 - on 17 of 27 from the field and three of six foul shots. But when you're a wrestler, losing eight' pounds in a day sometimes becomes a weekly ex- perience. In wrestling, one's weight af- fects one's performance in the most direct of ways: if you don't make your weight class, you don't wrestle. The problem of cutting weight con- stantly plagues wrestlers, whose weights vary an average of six to twelve pounds every week. "The best way (to lose weight) is to watch the calories in the beginning of the season and lose it over six to eight weeks," said coach Dale Bahr. "But doing it the right way and the way the wrestlers do it are sometimes diametrically opposed." Most wrestlers allow their weight to rise almost eight pounds immediately after a match. They then spend the following week trying to work the weight off in time for the next week's weigh-ins. "I take protein and food sup- plements, and I try to get down to eight pounds (over wrestling weight) for the last two days," said 134-pounder Larry Haughn. "then I lose the liquids. Right after you weigh in, you just suck back the fluids." One-hundred seventy-seven pounder Rob Rechsteiner takes a different ap- J MARTY'S... GOES DUTCH TREAT WITH THEIR SIXTH ANNUAL.. .
