SPORTS The Michigan Daily Wednesday, February 11, 1981 Page 7 It's official Giordano named permanent icer coach By MARTHA CRALL Acting coach John Giordano was ap- pointed head coach of the Michigan hockey team after the Board in Control of Intercollegiate Athletics approved the move Monday. Athletic Director Don Canham informed Giordano yesterday. "I'm very pleased," said Giordano. "But I wasn't surprised. It isn't like taking over at the very beginning in September. The newness of the job has all worn off." 0 GIORDANO IS only the seventh head coach the Wolverines have had in their 59 years of hockey. He succeeds first- year coach Wilf Martin, who was only behind the bench for Michigan's first two games of the season, a home-and- home series with Bowling Green. Martin, a former Michigan hockey Captain under Al Renfrew, was ailing for most of the pre-season and resigned because of health reasons on November 6 after being hospitalized. Giordano, 36, was the assistant under Dan Farrell in 1979-80. Giordano coached high school hockey at Harper Woods Notre Dame for eight seasons before he came to Michigan. THE WAYNE STATE graduate was faced with a very adverse set of cir- cumstances from the outset, including the loss of Michigan's top three scorers, being picked to finish last in the WCHA by pre-season pollsters, and extremely *negative publicity surrounding the hazing incident. "He took over in a bad situation and ,he's done a remarkably good job," said Canham. "I think he deserves a chance, besides which'I like him personally." Giordano has proved to be a well- IM SCORES MONDAY Basketball Playoffs Independent Class 'A' The Geeks 44, Mash 40- GCats 63, Hamilton Black Sheep 39 Aces 2, Studs From Apt 'C' 0 (forfeit) Fouls Outs 50, Old Timers 44 Class *' Old Gang 43, DA's Office 38 Special Edition 49, 411 Limited 34 Late Entry 49, Wham Jammers 21 U Towers 33, Shots & Chasers 25 Fraternity 'A' Class 'A' Omega Psi Phi 53, sigma Alpha Epsilon 46 Chi Psi 22, Delta Kappa Epsilon 20 Fraternity 'B' Class 'A' Sigma Nu 2, Phi Beta Sigma 0 (forfeit) Delta Tau Delta 26, Delta Upsilon 22 Co-Rec 'A' Amoebas 94, Couzens 34 Co-Rec 'B' Remmants 49, Evans Scholars 36 Graduate 'A' Pisces 56, M-2 Plaques 36 Graduate ,B' Covemen 59, Nu Sigma Nu Abscesses 42 Women's Competitive Class 'A' Bouncers 25, Breaks 12 Women's Recreative AFROTC 37, Inclusions 34 The Dobbers 44, Geddes Go Dunks 33 Dead Bears 38, Loose Ball Fouls 34 Residence Hall 'A' Class 'B' " Adams House "A" 40 Elliott Titans "A" 36 Residence Hall 'B' 'B' Class 'B' 6th V.D. Although not always agreeing with his every move, most of the players think he has made decisions which have tur- ned out for the best. "HE HAS LEARNED a lot this year. He gets better every weekend and be where we are," said senior Roger Bourne. "He works hard and he's really dedicated to the program." "HE'S PROVEN he can coach in this league," said sophomore Ted Speers. "He's done a great job and I'm sure he will continue to do a real good job." Giordano has taken his team of no- stars to an 11-11 record in the WCHA and a 17-13 mark overall this season and the playoffs appear to be imminent. (Michigan is currently in sixth place in the league with six games remaining, and the first eight teams make the play- offs.) Captain Tim Manning said, "He deserved it. He took our team and has done a real good job. I think (Canham) made a good choice." GIORDANO PLANS to sit down as soon as the season is over to devise the type of program he would like to im- plement, which he says will take at least a couple of months. He is busy on the recruiting trail already, however, and has some thoughts about what strategies he would like to use. "First of all, I want the kids to make a commitment to the program," he said. "I think that is very important. I want them to play disciplined hockey." "I like the European flow systems," he continued. "I also want us to be tough in our own defensive zone, which we haven't been lately. I want a swar- ming-like defense with heavy body checking." "I WOULD LIKE a team that will be reflective of the school," said Giordano. "A classy kind of team." Giordano said he will wait until the end of the season to name an assistant coach. Graduate assistant Jeff Jackson, a Michigan State alumnus, had been thrown into a part-time coaching job when Giordano took over. All the initial tests are over for Gior- dano, but he will begin his reign as the permanent mentor this Friday. The Wolverines will travel to Duluth to take on Minnesota-Duluth in a weekend series with the Bulldogs, who are seventh in the WCHA with a 9-13 record. BILLBOARD The women's basketball game scheduled for last night against Grand Valley State in Allendale was cancelled due to the inclement weather. As of yet, the game has not been rescheduled. The women cagers return to action this- weekend in the Big Ten Championship - tournament in Evanston, Illinois.
