. #i SPORTS The Michigan Daily -------------- Friday, January 30, 1981 .. . ........ I - - = . . ........ - - Blue tames 'Cats, 77-52 +'. By JON MORELAND Special to the Daily EVANSTON - For the first 30 minutes last night, Michigan found itself entangled in yet another tightt Big Ten basketball game. Then the Wolverines scored 14 unanswered points t against Northwestern here, and suddenly found t themselves enjoying their first breather of the con- ference season, a 77-52 triumph over the last-place ; Wildcats in McGaw Hall. IT WAS A CLOSE CONTEST when Northwestern's t John Egan converted a lay-up with 10 minutes left in I the game, cutting Michigan's lead to five points at 57- 52. That's when Mike McGee and Johnny Johnson, hit-l ting a pair of buckets apiece, pulled the Wolverines c away from the Wildcats and into a large lead which t they never relinquished.I "We treated this game with special importance," said Michigan coach Bill Frieder. "We were worried c Windy City breeze about being lethargic so we tried to run and press and control the tempo of the game." FRIEDER ALSO SAID HE was pleased with the game-deciding 14-point stretch in the second half. "(Just before the string) we called time out and told them to just stick with the game plan. We didn't tell them to do anything different," Frieder said. - "It was a nice spurt and McGee played well in that stretch." With his performance last night, McGee moved into the number five spot on the all-time Big Ten scoring list. He is only 83 points behind Cazzie Russell on the all-time Michigan scoring list. MICHIGAN MAINTAINED leads of five to seven points throughout most of the first fourteen minutes of the first half, and when Jim Stack converted a three-point play, Michigan's lead was cut to 24-20 with six minutes left. Michigan then went on an 8-1 spurt over the next two minutes to take early control of the game. A dunk by Thad Garner, followed by a pair :qf baskets by Johnson and another 20-footer by Garnter provided the scoring during the stretch. North- western was only able to counter with a single Rod Roberson free-throw during the stretch, and when Northwestern called time out with 4:09 left, Michigan had a 32-21 lead. A lay-up by Paul Schultz and a pair of free throw by Stack cut Michigan's lead back to seven, kit Michigan came back when Garner hit a pair of free throws and McGee connected on a lay-up to give the Wolverines another 11-point lead at 36-25. In the final two minutes of the first half, North western outscored Michigan, 6-2, as Roberson con- verted on a pair of field goals and Egan made a lay- up. Michigan's only score in that stretch was a lay-up by McGee. That enabled the Wolverines to take a 38- 31 lead itito the lockerroom at halftime. McGee.......... Garner............ Heuerman.........
