A Page 10-Tuesday, January 27, 1981-The Michigan Daily Gophers, Sioux in showdown for first By TOM SHAHEEN How does North Dakota coach John "Gino" Gasparini plan to stop an offen- sive power which has scored 27 goals in its last four games and boasts three of the top five leading scorers in the W CHA? "1'm going to church every day this week," quipped Gasparini. "Maybe those three guys will fall down the stairs and break their legs." While the always-colorful Fighting Sioux coach was merely joking, he realizes that stopping the mighty Min- nesota offense is a formidable task in- deed. The two first-place teams square off at Williams Arena in Minneapolis for a key WCHA weekend series. Minnesota, ranked first in the nation, is coming off two big victories against Michigan, while North Dakota split its series with a hot Colorado College team. North Dakota displayed some firepower of its own Friday night as it demolished Colorado College, 12-5. The Tigers fell apart in the latter stages of the contest, as goals came easy for the Fighting Sioux. The next evening star- ted out to be a carbon copy of the first, as North Dakota jumped to an early 2-0 lead. But Colorado College kept the pressure on the uninspired North Dakota icers and came up with a 6-5 up- set victory which prevented the Fighting Sioux from' assuming sole ... ..., f... "Our goaltending wasn't up to par, but we'll be ready for the Gophers this week." Denver at Notre Dame While Notre Dame isn't out of the playoff picture, things look grim for coach Charles "Lefty" Smith's icers. The Fighting Irish lost a pair of games to Denver last weekend, and the team's record plummeted to 5-12-1 in the WCHA. Despite the superior offensive and defensive play of Notre Dame's Jeff Logan, a junior from Grosse Pointe Shores, the Irish couldn't keep the door closed on the charging Pioneer offense which tallied six times for a one-goal opening victory. Then Denver blasted Notre Dame in the series finale, 9-4. The victories put the Pioneers just one point behind the league leaders (Min- nesota and North Dakota), and Denver is optimistic about the coming weekend, as it travels to East Lansing to face the last-place Michigan State Spartans. Notre Dame goes north to face Minnesota-Duluth and try to keep its playoff hopes alive, albeit barely. Duluth at Wisconsin Wisconsin raced past Minnesota- Duluth on Friday night, 7-2, and picked up a come-from-behind 4-3 decision the next evening to keep pace with the leaders in the WCHA. After scoring two quick goals in the second game, itappeared to be Wiscon- sin's night. But Duluth scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead, and the Badgers were in trouble. Freshman Brian Mullen came to the rescue, scoring a shorthanded goal in the third period, and from then on it was all Wisconsin. The two defeats left Duluth in a sixth- place tie with Michigan and Colorado College. Michigan State at Michigan Tech Goaltendling. A perfect description for the Michigan Tech-Michigan State series. Unfortunately for the Spartans, WCHA Report' Tech goalie Frank Krieber put on a super netminding show, allowing one goal in the Saturday night affair after an opening-night shutout. The perfor- mhnce earned the Huskies' goaltender the WCHA Player of the Week honor. The victories, 5-0 and 4-1', left Michigan Tech just two games out of first place. In the other "big" series this weekend, Coach John MacInnes's Huskies face Wisconsin. Only four poin- ts separate his team from first place in the WCHA. "We've had a lot of flu and illness," said Wisconsin coach Bob Johnson. "Whenever our two teams get together, expect a fast and physical showdown." TORONTO (UPI)-Mark Kirton scored two third-period goals against his for- mer teammates and added an assist to power the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-2 victory last night over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Kirton, traded to Detroit from Toronto Dec. 4, broke a 2-2 deadlock at 6:22 of the final period when he surprised goalie Jiri Crha with a quick 20-foot wrist shot in- side the right post. At 10: 58, Kirton broke down the left wing and found an opening under the crossbar from 30 feet out. Reed Larson, who has scored 11 times in the past 12 games, collected his 19th goal of the season at 11:09 when his screened slapshot went-into the net off Crha's pads. At 17:56, Willie Huber scored his fourth goal of the season on a similar drive after taking a- feed from Kirton, giving the Wings a 2-0 lead. Toronto evened the count in the second period. Rick Vaive was credited with his 23rd of the season at 6:01. With Detroit on a power play, Detroit goalie Larry Lozinski attempted to clear the puck but hit Huber with it and watched it rebound into the net. Lewis, and the in- tramural department staff will compile weekly rankings of the top ten teams across divisions for major IM sports, such as basketball, touch football, and softball. We hope that the rankings (see page 9) will add another dimension to our coverage of IM sports and heighten the already-fierce competitive spirit that has long been associated with the IM program.
