Bob If you're eager to read another cliche- ridden analysis of a great Michigan football victory, read no further. ' If profound theories about the 1980 Wolverines send you sky high, read The Sporting News. This column has little to do with what actually took place on the field New Near's Day when Michigan defeated ashington, 23-6, to claim its first post- season bowl victory since 1965. Those kind of pieces become stale six days af- ter the game has been played. Besides, who wouldn't want to read about Bob Ufer? If you grew up in the Detroit area, as I did, or anyplace that was within ear- shot of the WJR/WPAG signal, Bob Ufer was Saturday afternoon in the stadium if you couldn't be there. Down near the goal line, he would get Wou pumped up for another M-E-E-E- C-H-E-E-G-A-N touchdown. Third and one on defense. He's got 'em lined up in a five-man front with two linebackers. Numbers, names, hometowns. God bless their cottin pickin' maize and blue hearts! That was Mo Morton's 123rd tackle! He had 151 in 1975! He had 51 in 1974! And TWELVE of those BIG M-E-E-E-C-H-E- E-G-A-N tackles came against Ohio State and Doctor Strangehayes in the Snakepit! Love it, but remember it. Take it into schpol on Monday morning and stump the hell out of everyone who wanted to Cannavino, L ilja head *for Hawaii The Michigan football season, over for most of the Wolverines, will con- tinue for seniors George Lilja and Andy Cannavino. The two team captains will first travel to Honolulu to play in the Hula Bowl on January 10. Following this All- atar game, linebacker Cannavino and center Lilja will play in the Japan Bowl at Yokohama. The starting times for these two con- tests will be 4 p.m. (EST) and 11:30 p.m., respectively. The performances of Lilja and Cannavino will be closely viewed by NFL scouts, who will be preparing for April's college draft. Ufer's someday sit in that student section and cheer on the Maize and Blue to victory after victory. My father and I would go to nearly every game during my junior high and high school days, and brought Ufer with us. The crowd sitting around would always grab a listen, especially when the Wolverines crossed the goal line. He could come in as loud and clear as 100,400screaming fans. When the final gun sounded and darkness had enveloped the majestic San Gabriel Valley, I couldn't help but finest They wanted a victory and they wan- ted him to relish in every second of it. Ufer, after all, is the inspiration. The pulse which monitors the (mostly) ups and downs of the Wolverines. The generator which fuels the frenzy of a Rose Bowl victory. This was not his first Pasadena triumph. He had the 1948 game (49-0 over Southern California), the '51 con- test (14-6 over California), and the '65 classic (34-7 over Oregon State) already in his collection. But I sensed that this was Bob Ufer's hour about these broadcasts. They come straight from a heart of maize and blue. Three days earlier, I found myself sitting at Ufer's table at the Big Ten Dinner for Champions. I wanted to talk with him about the upcoming game, but so many faithful alumni demanded his time that he barely had a chance to sit down and eat his dinner. And you knew, with all certainty, that he truly enjoyed every minute of their company. Bob Ufer has always said that Michigan people are a special breed of people who share a unique quality. I hope most Michigan people, both students and alumni alike, would agree that Bob Ufer is a breed unto himself, a man who has made us so very proud, especially now, to be associated with the University. As the sun baked the large throng of Michigan supporters who were sitting on the west side of the stadium, Ufer stuck his head out the window of his press box booth and waved in response to those who chanted, "U-F ER, U-FER, U-FER." He did the same after the game was over. finest moment. Finally, after 12 years of post-season frustration, Bo "General George Patton" Schembechler had finally smelled the roses! And Bo has won more games than any other coach in M-E-E-E-C-H-E-E-E-G-A-N history except the great Fielding H. Yost! His health may have failed him in recent weks, but Ufer didn't show it. There he was, sitting in that booth with Don Lund, painting the verbal and visual picture with his patented sincere exuberance.
