The puck floated across the front of the net many -times, but none could get it past Spartan goalie Ron Scott. Several Wolverines fired a flurry of shots at the goal but Scott continued to deflect the puck away. Michigan tied the game in the third period of 4:31, 3-3, when Ted Speers smai~shed a slap shot on the, run from the point that sailed over Scott's shoulder.' *But Michigan State's Ken *Paraskevin, who was all over the ice throughout the game, scored his third goal of the evening og~ a breakaway. The Wolverines got on the board first ,at 3:12, when Roger Bourne intercepted a pass from Spartan Bill Shutt and fired a slap shot from the top of the circle that flew clean past Scott into the net. iBut just 50 seconds later, Michigan State right wing Paraskevin stole the puck in the Michigan end and fired a slap shot to the short side that beat Varvari. Michigan pressured the Spartans in the first half of the period, keeping the puck in the Michigan State end. But the Wolverines could not break the deadlock. In the second half of the period, the Wolverines lost some of their intensity, and the Spartans began to apply the pressure. But the defense and Varvari remained strong and the period ended ina 1.1 tie. The second period was much like the first. Michigan took a 2-1 leadI early when left wing Kelly McCrimmon cracked a slap shot from the blue line that hit Scott's stick and was deflected into the corner of the net. But the Spartans came right back at 6:32. The puck floated free of a crowd to Varvari' s right and Paraskevin hesitated as the goalie slid to the ice an- tic ipating the shot, then slipped the puck around Varvari. Then at 18:09 Michigan State took the lead when left wing Gary Harpell cleared the. puck out of the crowd behind the net. Bob Martin then beat Varvari to the right corner of the net and it was 3-2, Michigan State. Michigan State missed an oppor- tunity to score 'on a power play that began at 0:54, when Varvari broke his stick. Richmond gave the goalie his stick and skated to the bench for a new one. Varvari had to play the remainder of the power play with a regular stick. SAVES M (Varvari)...............14 13 11 - 38 MSU (Scott)...............12 6 12 - 30 By RANDY BERGER The Michigan wrestling team got back, on the winning track last night as they downed Northern Illinois 21-14. After dominating the early matches the Blue grapplers needed big wins from 190-pounder Pat McKay and heavyweight Eric Klassen to preserve the victory. In the beginning it looked as if Michigan was going to run away with it. In the first Match 118 pound Wolverines Joe McFarland pinned his opponent Ernie Christmas with 1:15 left in the third round. McFarland had no problem in what was to be the only pin of the match. MICHIGAN ADDED five more points as Jim Mathias at 126 won and Bill Goodill at 134 tied. At this point Michigan had a commanding 11-2 lead. The next match proved to be the most exciting of the day. Lou Milani, wrestling for the first time at 142, lost in the last second 10-9. Losing 8-7 with only five seconds left, Milani pulled a reversal to go ahead, but he couldn't hang on as his opponent used the same move to win. TIM FAGAN AT 150 won convincingly to bolster Michigan's lead to 14-5. Michigan's middle weights once again had trouble -as the Maize and Blue lost the next three matches and the score was all tied up at 14 apiece. Michigan's strength showed off in the long run, however, as McKay earned a major decision and Klassen garnered three points to give Michigan their third victory of the year against five defeats. Head coach Dale Bahr was pleased with the win but still wants better performances from the middle weights : "We. got three good matches in the beginning, and strong wins at the finish, but we have to start winning in the middle, especially at 142." The tgrapplers will now go on the road for three tough Big Ten conference meets before returning home to face Michigan State January 30.
