Page 12-Friday, December 11, 1981-The Michigan Daily Harte o the hoop intensity i By KEN SHORE When a coach goes out to look for ballplayers, she looks for ability, poten- tial, and desire. This past year, Michigan women's basketball coach Gloria Soluk was fortunate enough to find all three in freshman center Peg Harte. So far this year, Harte has averaged 22.4 points per game by shooting 58 per- cent from the floor. Although she is only 5'8", Harte is averaging 8.6 rebounds per game as well. HER BEST attribute, however, is her intense desire to play hard and win. "She plays with so much heart and so much desire that it carries over to the team," points out Soluk. "She's a win- ner who knows how to play only one way." And that way is "all the way." "I'M ALWAYS giving 100 percent," said Harte. "Even if we get ahead, I play like we're behind." "She is a very intense, determined player," says older sister and team- mate K.D. Harte. "Those two qualities are hard to stop on the floor." K.D. is four years older than Peg. As a result of having to sit out a year due to her transfer from Oakland University, me," says Peg. "She was so mean and tough that after playing with her, I'm not afraid to play with anybody." EVEN THOUGH K.D. had already been at Michigan for two years, she did not influence Peg's decision to enroll here last spring. "K.D. did not have an influence on me in coming to Michigan," added Peg. "Mom talked me into coming here because of the school's reputation and closeness." After two years as a Wolverine, Russell left for the pros, and last night he returned to Pontiac to lead his New York Knicks teammates to an exciting 106-101 win over the Detroit Pistons at the Silver- dome last night. Russell had six points and two assists in the overtime period crush a valiant come-from-behind effort by ' the, Pistons. "I was definitely happy with the- way our team played, ut we've got to keep getting better." Russell's heroics presented Detroit with its seventh consecutive loss, drop- ping to 8-12 for the year. The Knicks, meanwhile, moved their record up to 10-9. Going into the second half, the, possibility of an overtime period looked, very remote. The Pistons, plagured by 38 percent shooting from the field in the first half, went into the locker room at half time, trailing 62-47. BUT THE Detroiters came out hot in the third quarter, closing the gap to six points, and hotter in the fourth quarter,' as the Pistons even led several times before settling for a 90-90 tie at the erd of regulation. "We got mentally tough in the second half," said Detroit head coach Scotty Robertson. "But it was too late. We should have come out ready to play in the first half." Detroit even had a chance to win the game in regulation, as Kelly Tripucka went to the free throw line with an 6p: portunity to put the Pistons ahead by two with 18 seconds left in the game:'- But both shots bounced off the rim and'. the score remained deadlocked. Despite this, Tripucka had a splendid' night leading all scorers with a career high 36 points and a team leading 10 rebounds. "The kid (Tripucka) played a helluva game," admitted New York head coach Red Holtzman. "Every time they needed a basket, he got one. I can't say' anything but good things about him. He' is very good now but he is going to be great." ' r r g t - I 1 °** FOLLOW THE WOLVERINES TO THE BLUEBONNET BOWL. And stay with us for just $29 a night!
