This weekend, however, the Michigan hockey team will not have that advantage. The Wolverines have travelled to Ox- ford, Ohio where they will take on the Miami Redksins for the first time ever, in a two-game -Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) series starting tonight and concluding with the finale tomorrow night at Miami Ice Arena. 'THERE ARE a lot of uncertainties since this is the first opportunity we've ever had to play Michigan," said Red- skin head coach Steve Cady. "I do know that Michigan is a team with very good work habits and that they are very disciplined hockey players. All in all, it ought to be a pretty good series." Judging from this season's record, the fourth place Wolverines, who sport a 5-3-2 conference record, should have a relatively easy time with the 3-5-0 Miami squad. Last weekend, the 'Skins lost two conference games at Notre Dame and consequently fell to eighth place in the CCHA. However, as Michigan hockey coach 'John Giordano is prone to say, "there are really no 'easy' teams in the CCHA." The Wolverines found this out last weekend when they were forced to be content with a conference series split against tenth place Ohio State. In ad- dition, the Miami squad sports several talented players that ought to prove to be tough competition for the Wolverines. *Wings wi, 4-1 DETROIT (UPI) - Derek Smith and Mike Blaisdell fired first period goals to push the Detroit Red Wings to an early lead and keep them in front on the way to a 4-1 win over the Minnesota North Stars last night. The victory was only the second for the Red Wings in their last 11 outings and lifted them out of the National Hockey League Norris Division basement. Detroit is now 9-15-5, two points ahead of last place Toronto. THE NORTH Stars, pacesetters of the division, are winless in their last five games, showing only a pair of ties and leaving them 12-7-9. Smith opened the scoring at 4:50 of the first period, slipping home a rebound of John Barrett's long shot from the point. The goal was the fourth of the season for Smith and his first sin- ce joining the club in a trade with Buf- falo Dec. 2. The Red Wings upped their lead to 2-0 at 12:19 when Mark. Kirton trapped a Minnesota pass; moved over the blue line and threw a short shot to Blaisdell who beat Minnesota goalie Don Beaupre from 20-feet. MINNESOTA WAS two men shy for 3:47 early in the second and held off the Red Wings until Greg Smith's long point drive bounced off Beaupre's pads and Walter McKechnie ripped home the rebound for his sixth goal of the season at 6:33. Steve Christoff notched Minnesota's lone tally, whipping Craig Harisburg's rebound past Detroit netminder Bob Sauve at 3:44 of the third period. Defenseman Greg Smith completed the scoring with Detroit's fourth goal, a long drive from inside the Minnesota blue line that was deflected past- Beaupre after Paul Woods and Willie Huber set up the play. The Red Wings held a definite offen- sive edge over the distance, outshooting their visitors 33-16. MIAMI HAS a potent offense which features five players who rank in the top 10 in CCHA overall scoring in- cluding the top line of center Steve Morris (14-17-31) between wings Dave Wheeldon (9-18-27) and Rick Kuraly and Wheeldon are injured and I'm not really sure how much I'll be able to play them." Cady said that the goalie position is the biggest question mark for his team. "IF OUR goalies play like they have been the last couple of weeks, we're going to be in big trouble," he said. "This position is our weakest area right now. If we aren't able to improve from past weeks and think ahead, we could get buried." Michigan's strong point as usual will be its defense, led by senior co-captains Dave Richter and Steve Richmond. Richmond, who collected his first goal of the season last weekend, hboosting the Wolverines to a 7-3 win over Ohio State, will enter this weekend's series with 99 career points,(seeking to become the third Michigan defenseman to hit the century mark. Richmond already owns the career mark for goals by a defen- seman at Michigan with 35. The Wolverines are also strong at goal with the CCHA's top-ranked goalie Peter Mason and third-ranked Jon Elliott. Mason has held his opponents with a stingy 1.72 goals against average while Elliott has a 2.58 gaa. The Michigan attack will undoub- tedly be headed by junior Ted Speers, who currently leads the team with 11 goals and three assists, and Brad Tip- pett, who has six goals and six assists. 0 0 ALL MEN'S & WOMEN'S PANTS . 20-50% OFF ALL MEN'S & WOMEN'S SHIRTS .20-50% OFF ALL DOWN COATSPC..........2050% OFF ALL CROSS COUNTRY SKI PACKAGES ON SALE ONE DAY MOUNTING ON SKIS WE RENT CROSS COUNTRY SKIS Richmond ... nears century mark nickels arcade 7616207 I HOURS: Sun (12-5) Mon-Fri (10-8) Sat (10-5:30) (11-13-24). "So far this season we have had to rely most upon our upperclassmen such as Morris, Wheeldon and Kuraly as our main scorers," said Cady.
