The Michigan Daily-Thursday, December 10,,1981--Page 9 'M' volleyball squad ready for Nationals I mobb... -A C r 74"'k) By BOB WOJNOWSKI, ,The Michigan women's volleyball team is in Tallahassee today in quest of something that has eluded Wolverine sports teams for more than a decade-a national cham- pionship. Not since the men's gymnastics team won it all in 1970 has a Michigan team been crowned as the nation's best. You have to go back 17 years to find the last hockey cham- pionship, 19 years for the last baseball championship, and 33 years for the last time the Michigan foot- ball team took top honors in the country. ALTHOUGH THE Wolverines are not listed as the favorites in the 12- team AIAW National Champion- ships hosted by Florida State, they are riding the crest of a 10-game winning streak, a Big Ten Cham- pionship and the MAIAW Regional championship. They are a team with momentum, and head coach Sandy Vong hopes a week off from practice after the regional championship two weeks ago has primed hi9rspikers for the nationals, "We were playing hurt, we had a lot of injuries and everybody showed a lot of heart," said Vong. "We gave them a week off and then started practicing-but nothing' too inten- se." The tournament is divided into four pools of three teams each, with Michigan (39-13) playing in Pool A. The Wolverines open against ninth- ranked and top-seeded Texas (54-6) at 9 a.m. this morning, and will then face Pittsburgh (36-13) later in the day. The first round will consist of best-of-five matches, with the top two teams in each pool advancing to the second round. The qualifying eight teams will then engage in double-elimination competition until a champion is determined. NOTICEABLY absent from this year's field are such big-time powerhouses from the past as UCLA and Hawaii. In addition to Michigan, Texas :and Pittsburgh, the tour- nament includes Florida State, Nor- th Carolina, S.W. Missouri State, Utah State, Portland State, Min- nesota, Ohio State, Texas-Arlington and California. And, in Vong's estimation, it promises to be an ex- citing tournament. "There are a lot of even teams in the field, unlike in past years when you had such dominant teams as, say, a UCLA," he said. The Wolverines will be led by All- Big Ten Diane Ratnik, a freshman, and sophomore Alison Noble, who joined Ratnik on the All-Regional team. But Vong, who stresses teamwork and tends to downplay in- dividual accomplishments, is looking for a total team effort as the volleyballers g6 for something that a Michigan team hasn't gotten in 11 years. (AP)- The New York Yankees' managerial merry-go-round took another sudden turn yesterday when the American League champions announced at baseball's winter meetings that Gene Michael would return as the club's pilot for three years, beginning in 1983. The latest twist in the continuing Yankees' soap opera came after Cleveland sent outfielder Jorge Orta and two minor leaguers to Los Angeles for pitcher Rick Sutcliffe and second baseman Jack Perconte. MEANWHILE, Commissioner Bowie Kuhn took a day off from the meetings to testify in Washington at a congressional hearing on cable television. The Yankees held center stage at the meetings, announ- 'cirg that Michael would succeed Bob Lemon, who will handle the club for 1982 before moving on to other duties in the organization. The Yankees' managerial shuffle was settled after owner George Steinbrenner granted Lemon's wish to manage the team for one more year. Thomas leads All-Star roting 1 . NEW YORK (AP) - The Detroit Pistons' brilliant rookie guard, Isiah Thomas, was the leading vote-getter for the Eastern Conference team in early balloting for starting ber- ths in the 1982 National Basketball Association All-Star Game, the league announced yesterday. Thomas, who is among the league leaders with a 20.1 scoring average and 7.4 assists per game, led the guards with 33,958 votes. Veteran Reggie Theus of the Chicago Bulls, a starter in last season's All-Star Game, was next among the guards with 27,581 votes, while Boston's Nate Archibald, the 1981 All-Star most valuable player, was third with 7,468.
