"Experienced wrestlers make a big difference," said Bahr. "Having (Pat) McKay and (Eric) Klasson coming last was a big advantage." MCKAY, wrestling at 190 pounds, made his first appearance since last season. He clung to a 3-2 victory over Penn State's Joel Johnson, however, which brought the score to 17-13, the Nittany Lions still ahead. "If Pat was in any kind of decent shape, he would have had no trouble at all tonight," commen- ted Bahr. As Michigan wrestling fans have come to expect, sophomore All- Join Sports Staff American Joe McFarland won the opening match. McFarland earned a 4-1 decision over Penn State's Carl Destefanis. Michigan then proceeded to lose the next three matches, before senior John Beljan, at 150 pounds, came through with a much-needed Michigan victory. Belgan stepped in for the injured Mark Pearson, and despite the fact that he was not in top shape, Beljan held on for the key 5-3 victory. Last Week, Pearson tore ligaments in his right thumb, and will be lost to the team until January at the earliest. FOLLOWING halftime, senior Nemir Nadhir (at 158 pounds) dominated Penn State freshman Eric Brugel, winning 18-11. With Nadhir's win, the score was deadlocked at 10-10. Michigan freshman Scott Rechsteiner (167) and Kevin Hill (177) were beaten by experienced opponents. Rechsteiner lost 4-1 to Penn State's cap- tain John Hanrahan, who was 33-6 last season. While Hill had a lot of trouble wrestling at two weight classes above his normal weight. Junior Lou Milani, wrestling for the first time in three weeks, started off in impressive fashion. But as a result of strained ligaments in his right knee Milani grew weaker as the match progressed. Wrestling at 142 pounds, Milani lost by a score of 9-4. Following Hill's match, the score stood at 17-10 as the stage was set for the heroics of McKay and Klasson.
