The deciding factor in this year's Cotton Bowl could be the kicking game. Both coach Akers and Bryant can rest easy in this category, Longhorn Paul Allegre and Peter Kim of the Crimson Tide are among the nation's finest kickers. -MATT HENEHAN SugtwBewt New Orleans, Louisiana January 1, 1982 Pittsburgh vs. Georgia Sould number-one ranked Clemson lose to Nebraska in the Orange Bowl, the Sugar Bowl could once again produce the national champion. Last year, the Superdome contest crowned a national champion when Georgia completed an 11-0 season with a 17-10 victory over Notre Dame. This year's match-up is one of the most attractive pairings in post-season play as the Pittsburgh Panthers play a team familiar with New Orleans, the Bulldogs of Georgia. Georgia is representing the Southeastern .Con- ference(SEC) for the second straight year. When one mentions the Bulldogs, the name of sophomore run- ning back Herschel Walker immediately comes to mind. Walker, the topic of several feature stories at the beginning of the year, responded well to the pre- season accolades with a banner season. The Wright- sville, Georgia native has been named to the Associated Press and Kodak All-American first teams after surpassing his 1980 total of 1,616 yards (an NCAA record for a freshman) this season. He already ranks among the all-time SEC rushers. IN ADDITION TO Walker, the Georgia offense features quarterback Buck Belue and wide receiver Lindsay Scott, who has caught 37 passes this season. Both players have been named to the All-SEC team for the second straight year. Belue, who did not com- plete a pass until late in the fourth quarter of last year's Sugar Bowl, is not likely to come up with a repeat performance this time. The Bulldog defense is anchored by All-SEC guard Eddie Weaver and linebacker Tony Thurson, the team's leading tackler. Pittsburgh's strength lies mainly in its defense, which leads the nation in several categories. The Panthers had allowed an average of 51 yards rushing and 150 yards passing prior to their 47-14 Thanksgiving weekend embarrassment at the hands of Penn State. Linebacker Sal Sunseri is the stalwart of the Panther defense and is a Kodak and AP All- American. Other Panther All-Americans are quar- terback Dan Marino, who has broken every Pitt passing record, and junior wide receiver Julius Dawkins, a first team AP selection alongside An- thony Carter. Center Emil Boures is a second-team AP All-American along with Marino. Pittsburgh was the national champion in 1976 with swift Tony Dorsett leading the way, but the Panthers' hopes of another title were dashed by the Nittany Lions. -RANDY BERGER Re- la, IB ad Tempe, Arizona January 1, 1982 USC vs. Penn State When Penn State and Southern Cal collide in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Day, it will mark their first meeting in 59 years, when the Trojans won the 1923 Rose Bowl, 14-3, in the only other contest the two teams have engaged in, While the Fiesta Bowl is still not established as one of the Big Four, the Penn State- USC matchup is a fine way for the Bowl to make its January 1 debut. Leading the Penn State offense is quarterback Todd Blackledge, who has piled up 1,557 yards passing for 12 touchdowns this season. He'll be throwing to- the Nittany Lions' leading receiver,., Gregg Garrity, or deep threat Kenny Jackson, who has hauled in six TC aerials this season. The key to the Penn State running attack is the health of Curt Warner, who has run for 1,044 yards this year despite nagging hamstring injuries. Spearheading the Penn State defense are linebackers Chet Parlavecchio and Mark Robinson, the Lions' leading tacklers. WITH ONLY 1,005 yards and seven TDs through the air, Trojan quarterback John Mazur has been overshadowed by the accomplishments of tailback Marcus Allen. Not only has Allen rushed for 2,342 yards (a collegiate season record) and 22 scores, but the USC senior is also the Trojans' leading receiver with 29 catches for 217 yards and one touchdown. An- choring the USC defense is Chip Banks, a consistent performer with 123 tackles this year. Perhaps the most exciting confrontation will be the coaching war between USC's John Robinson and Penn State's Joe Paterno. Both men are among the most respected and winningest coaches in college football today. -KARL WHEATLEY Atlanta, Georgia December 31, 1981 West Virginia vs. Florida Two exceptional passers, Oliver Luck of West Virginia and Wayne Peace of Florida, will be pitted against one another in thi Atlanta.
