Born and raised in southern Califor- nia, he won All-American honors in football at Mary Star of the Sea High School, and, to fulfill a boyhood dream, received a scholarship to attend UCLA. He has been the Bruins' starting tight end since the beginning of his sophomore year-another dream fulfilled. Last week he was named to the Associated Press and Kodak All- American first teams. AND FOR THOSE whese dreams flow along a different track, thumb through those old Sports Illustrateds of last spring until you run across a story on the UCLA song girls. See the big guy with his arms around the scrumptious bikini-clad flesh in the whirlpool? Yep, it's him. Ah, red-blooded Americanism But Wrightman, a Catholic, at one time contemplated forsaking the sun and fun of the West Coast to play his football ALL-AMERICAN tight end Tim Wrightman (inset) hauls in another pass for UCLA against Arizona. The senior tight end is the leading Bruin pass receiver this season with 26 catches to his credit. fr.. nBE _ AU WILD MAN @c We Vaidate9-5:30 pm PkngTickets Thurs & Fri PSTATE STREET ON THE CAMPUS Until 8:30 pm 668-8836 ______ gh~. a inland-on the legendary gridiron of Notre Dame. "I was thinking about UCLA and Notre Dame," said the 63, 237-pounder. "But when I went to Notre Dame to visit, it was 18 degrees there, a little too cold for the boy from southern Califor- nia. Things couldn't have turned out better for me. I couldn't have gone to a place where they were more suppor- tive of what I like to do." WHAT HE LIKES to do is catch the pigskin, and he did it more often than any other Bruin during the regular season, 26 times for 294 yards and five touchdowns. The numbers may not stun anyone, particularlycoming from the pass-happy Pac-10, but his con- tribution, both as a receiver and blocker, is a major factor anytime the Bruins chalk up a win. Wrightman contended that his team's relatively unimpressive 7-3-1 record is deceptive. "We really only got beat one time," he said, "and that was against Iowa (a 20-7 defeat). Andwe were hoping to have a rematch against them in the Rose Bowl, get a chance to play them on our own turf." Wrightman anticipates no difficulty, however, in getting pumped up for the Wolverine contest. "the team is ex- cited about playing a team of Michigan's stature in the Bluebonnet Bowl," he said. "After the loss to USC, if we were going to play a lesser team, it wouldn't have been worthwhile. I wouldn't have wanted to play against an Iowa in the Bluebonnet Bowl, for example." BESIDES HIS pass-catching duties, Wrightman provides a large measure of support to the Bruin running game, specializing in moving out to lead the UCLA tailback sweep. "My strengths are my blocking and my ability to get open and catch the ball," he said. "I take pride in both because we work hard on both aspects. "Maybe if I would have had the chan- ce to catch a few more balls, it (the season) would have been more pleasant, but things couldn't have gone much better. If you're not hungry to catch more balls, then it's time to become a lineman." WRIGHTMAN CARRIES A 3.2 grade point average as a history major and plans to someday go to law school-but first there is the matter of the NFL draft, in which he will likely beone of the first two tight ends selected. "I'm going to go to law school, but first I'm going to give pro ball a shot. If I didn't, with the God-given size and ability I've got, I would always be looking back and saying, 'Maybe I could have done it.' The pros are worried about my speed (4.9 in the 40- yard dash), but once you get signed, it doesn't matter what you run the 40 in, it's how you play the game." The crowds, the competition, the books, the girls-what does he do to get away from it all? "I like to go walking on the beach," he says. "I live four blocks away." Tim Wrightman has it made.
