Page 6-Tuesday. December 8, 1981-The Michigan Daily Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art, based on the sword move- ments and philosophy of ancient samurai tradition, but dedicated to physical and spiritual harmony. Training in Aikido combines rigorous exercise, technique practiced by two individuals together, and kata (formal movement patterns) done both empty-handed and with wooden sword, staff, and knife. Through continued study and repetition, students attempt to master the intricacies of balance and technique, learning to blend their movements with the energy of their partner. Aikido is a non-violent martial art that defends the self through non-resistance rather than force or physical strength. At its highest level, however, Aikido training is a vehicle for understanding the relationship of the self with nature. Sensei Takashi Kushida of Japan introduced Yoshinkai-style Aikido to this country in 1973. In August of this year the Aikido Yoshinkai Association of North America moved its North Ameri- can headquarters to Ann Arbor, with Kushida establishing the Genyokan dojo near the Ann Arbor City Airport. There, in classes held. several times daily, he instructs men-and-women of all ages in the art he has practiced for more than 25 years. Photos by Mike Lucas Daily photographer Mike Lucas spent several weeks pho- Stographing Kushida and his students-during classes, at a 9 demonstration, and at the semi-annual black belt test. Those interested in learning more about Aikido Yoshinkai may con- tact the headquarters dojo at 313/662-4686. Classes are held at the Genyokan dojo, 749 Airport Blvd., Ann Arbor, 48104, located in the Airport Plaza behind K-Mart, as well as at the University of Michigan and the Ann Arbor Y. r'5 mss.
