SPORTS A B the Michigan Daily Thursday, December 3, 1981 Page 7 ,w Durability the key By MARTHA CRALL If there is a single word to describe Michigan hockey player Steve Yoxheimer, it is probably durability. The scrappy right winger has scored three of his four goals this season since incurring a severe hip bruise during the Lake Superior State series four weeks ago in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. THE GOALS have come at the rate of one per game in each of the Wolverines' two games against Western Michigan and the opener of the Michigan State series. The Blue icers were shut out in the finale at Munn Ice Arena. "He's been playing hurt," said head coach John Giordano. "Durability is one of his strengths." Yoxheimer admits that he has played in pain, wearing extra padding in the last four games, but says that the pain has subsided. The injury occurred in the second game of the series with the Lakers after the sophomore had been bumped around in the previous game. "I WAS GOING after the defenseman behind the (Laker) net," Yoxheimer explained. "The goalie came out and backed into me. I was flying." Yoxheimer hit the net with such force that is was knocked off the spike which holds it to the ice. That was the final blow in a long line of hard hits and collisions during the series and was enough to sideline the usually unstop- pable Yoxheimer. The Jackson native can't explain it, but that is when his scoring came to life and he's been instrumental in Michigan's 2-1-1 record since then. "I'M VERY HAPPY with his progress," said Giordano. "He has good skating ability and good shooting ability and he's durable. He's done a very good job for us." Yoxheimer, whose five points ties him for fourth in team scoring, is very un- comfortable talking about himself but generally concurs with Giordano when assessing himself and adds to the for icei "strengths" list, "possibly my checking. "I tend to loop away from the play sometimes, though," he said. Giordano translated that, saying, "Sometimes, when the puck is going one way, he's going the other way. But that just comes from his skating style." HIS HOCKEY career got started rather late compared to most players. At the age of 14 he started playing, "because my Dad forced me to." After the early days in the Jackson Yoxheimer baseball. His 40 goals in 1977-78 earned him Junior Wing rookie-of-the-year honors. DESPITE ALL that, Yoxheimer wasn't recruited by any colleges, so he continued to play junior hockey. Then in 1980, Giordano recruited him to play at Michigan and he started his collegiate career as a 20-year-old freshman. In his first season, Yoxheimer en- joyed reasonable success for a rookie, playing in 19 games and scoring two points, while spending some time as a defenseman. Because of his late start, his eligibility will run out at the end of his junior season, according to NCAA rules. But Yoxheimer isn't one to look, too far into the future. "YOU'LL HAVE to ask me about the future next season," he said. "But I do plan to stay and *graduate unless something better comes along."- As for this year's team, Yoxheimer thinks Michigan (6-2-2) has done well, all things considered. "We have strength on defense," he said. "But we have some inexperienced forwards and a lot of freshmen. Things will im- prove." Yoxheimer said that his only per- sonal goal is to "win an NCAA ring." Nothing more, nothing less. Although the prospects of a national championship for Michigan are dim, the durability and determination of Steve Yoxheimer could make them a little brighter. (AP) - Danny Gare, the Buffalo Sabres team captain and holder of the club record for most * goals in a season, and goalie Bob Sauve, the National Hockey League's third leading goalie, were among four players traded yesterday to the Detroit Red Wings. Defenseman Jim Schoenfield, 29, an NHL second-team All-Star, and center Derek Smith, 27 also were sent to Detroit. THE SABRES, tied for second place in the Wales Conference, obtained the Red Wings' two leading scorers, center Dale McCourt, 24, and right wing Mike Foligno, 22, plus center Brent Peterson, 23. McCourt and Foligno have 13 goals and .13 assists apiece. Sabres Coach Scotty Bowman said the trades were made to help the team in the Stanley Cup playoffs, which the team has made every year since 1975 but never won. A spokesman for Detroit, which has gone 0-7-1 in the last eight games and is in ninth place in the Campbell Con- ference, said the trade would help the Red Wings out of a "tailspin." "IT IS ALWAYS with regret that we trade players who have performed so admirably for so long," Bowman said, " but we felt changes had to be made if we were to keep progressing toward our ultimate goal, the Stanley Cup." "It was a case of a decision having to be made," said Red Wings spokesman Budd Lynch. "The club has been in a tailspin for some time." The exchange is the latest in a series of big trades Bowman has made since his arrival in 1979. Gone are Richard Martin and Rene Robert, the wings of the famed French Connection line, and Don Luce, the team's fifth all- time leading scorer, JerryKorab and Rick Dudley. ONCE AGAIN, Bowman traded proven veterans for talented newcomers. Gare, 27, is No. 6 on the Sabres all- time leading scorers list. He set a club record in 1979-80 with 56 goals and he led the team in scoring last year with 46 goals and 39 assists. Sauve, 26, shared the Vezina Trophy symbolizing the league's best goalten- der with teammate Don Edwards in 1979-80, and this yeir his 2.76 goals- against average is third best in the NHL. Schoenfield, a former team captain, twice made the NHL All-Stars second team. Smith, a seven-year veteran, had his best year last year with 21 goals and 43 assists.
