SPORTS I I 90 Thes Michigan Daily Wednesday, December 2, 1981 Page 7 CagerQ By KEN SHORE The women's basketball team opened its home season last night by playing its "Harte" out in defeating the Ferris State Bulldogs 97-69. The team was lead in scoring by senior Diane Dietz who contributed 22 points, but the real story centered around freshman standout Peg Harte. Playing with the stomach flu, Harte managed 21 points and 6 rebounds in 34 minutes of play. The team itself, however, was not very impressive as Coach Soluk pointed out. "WE DIDN'T play very well," stated cach Soluk. "We lacked intensity because we had seen them play before." Dietz attributed Michigan's lack of whip intensity and sloppy play to the team "playing down to Ferris State level." "They gave up the fast break too much," said Dietz. "As a result we were unable to work on our offense and defense." Both teams started off slowly, throwing the ball away. At 9:40 of the first half Michigan took control of the game when they outscored the Bulldogs 25-6. This spurt was lead by Peg Harte who had six points and one assist in this stretch. The team finished the half with 50 points hitting on 71 percent from the field, compared to the Bulldogs meager 33 percent from the floor. THE SECOND half started out much like the first half in which neither team wanted to take control. But Michigan once again took over the game midway Ferris, through the second stanza as they out- scored Ferris State 22-8. In other action, at the Grand Rapids Press tournament over Thanksgiving, Michigan defeated Western Michigan 93-74 and Central Michigan 85-77 respectively. THE-HIGHLIGHT of the tournament came in the second game when Diane Dietz scored her 1,551 career point to make her the all-time leading scorer in Michigan history. Dietz finished the tournament with 43 points and 10 97-69 rebounds. She was named co-Most Valuable player, along with Ferris State's Monta Ware. The other Michigan star of the tour- nament was center Peg Harte. Harte, playing in her first games as a Wolverine, averaged 28.5 points and 11.5 rebounds for the tournament. Soluk is ecstatic over the team's quick start, "Winning our first three games is a great way to start the season. This is the best Michigan team I've ever coached." INDEPENDENT BEAVER PATROL For the third time in the last four years, Beaver Patrol came out on top of the Independent Division. Beaver Patrol has built a dynasty in intramural football that would make even Bo Schembechler envious. In their nine-year existence, Beaver Patrol has been to the finals seven times and has won the title four times. The team, which consists of nine players "none of which stand out as stars," according to captain Gary Forhan, breezed through the regular season. In its first game, Beaver Patrol smothered Disturbed Furniture 48-0 and then in pouring rain edged out the Cambridge Dogs 2-0. In its final regular season game, Beaver Patrol easily disposed of the Weekend Warriors 22-0. Beaver Patrol continued its domination right into the playoffs as they beat the Spud Boys 54-6 and the Arbory Pirates 20-0 in the opening rounds. In the semi-finals, the Beaver Patrol came upon its stiffest challenge of the season. Losing 20-8 late in the fourth quarter to the Bruisers, Jim Paciorek, a Michigan baseball standout caught a Forhan pass to pull Beaver Patrol within four points. After a Joe Goodsin interception, the Patrol marched down the field to go ahead with less than two minutes remaining. It was only after Beaver Patrol held the Bruisers for four plays on its own two yard line that the Patrol could celebrate. After this win, the playoff finale was a for- mality, as the Beaver's washed out the Warlocks 22-8. RESIDENCE HALLS RUMSEY HOUSE 'A' Despite starting eight freshmen, the Rumsey House 'A' team had little trouble in winning this year's Residence Hall title. The defense was definitely the stronghold as Rumsey House only allowed two touchdowns all year. Rumsey rolled through its regular season schedule by beating Apocalypse Now 24-0, Blagdon Scammers 46-6, and the Little Schmucks 36-0. The Little Schmucks were Rumsey's opponents again in the opening round of the playoffs and again were humiliated by a score of 42-0. After beating Mitchell House 16-0, the Mojo Raiders 16-6, and the Wenley Sleeper 14-8. Rumsey met Taylor House in the finals. The defense not only shut down the opponents but also contributed for all the touchdowns. Tom Phelps and Jay West scored on interception returns and West also returned a punt back for a TD to pace the Rumsey House to a 22-10 victory. FRATERNITY SIGMA ALPHA EPSILON Behind the leadership of quarterbacks Jeff Harris and Anthony Amine, and middle linebacker Tim Hogan, Sigma Alpha Epsilon won the Fraternity division. Spurred by a 6-0 victory over Phi Delta Theta in the semi-finals on a Duane Kubiak catch from Harris with only 13 seconds remaining, Sigma Alpha Epsilon went on to beat Phi Gamma Delta 8-6 in the finals.
